Electronics, IT exports to grow 27% in Fy-06

NEW DELHI: India's electronics and IT exports are estimated to register a 27 percent growth during 2005-06 to touch $25386.36 million compared to $20040.90 million in the previous year. According to the latest annual report of Department of Information Technology, “The software and services industry continues to show a robust growth and the total value of software and services export are estimated at $23.4 billion in the year 2005-06, as against $17.7 billion in the year 2004-05, an increase of 32 percent in dollar terms." The report noted that the BPO sector had emerged as a key driver of growth for the Indian software and services industry. The ITES-BPO industry is likely to grow by 37 percent in 2005-06 to reach $6.3 billion. In 2004-05, the Indian ITES-BPO industry grew by 48 percent to $4.6 billion, it said. The consumer electronics sector is estimated to achieve a production level of $4204.54 million during 2005-06 as compared to $3818.18 million in the year 2004-05, thus achieving a growth rate of 10 percent. "The fast growing segments during the year were color TV, DVD players, home theatre systems. The color TV production shot up to over 11 million units during 2005-06. VCD/MP3 player sales have witnessed an impressive growth and have crossed 10 million mark during the year," it added. "However, the Indian color TV picture tube could not sustain the production level achieved during last year and the production stood at 10.05 million units during 2005 as against 11.2 million numbers during the year 2004," it said. The sale of personal computers is likely to touch 47 lakh units during the year 2005-06. The communication and strategic electronics sector is showing a growth of 10 percent.
