NEW DELHI: The Indian IT industry cannot be a world beater until it begins to focus on its hardware sector, says Deepak Puri, chairperson and managing director of Moser Baer. The IT honcho, whose company was named the Top Hardware Exporter of the Year 2004 by leading IT magazine Dataquest, said Tuesday evening that the IT industry's strength currently lay in software and business process outsourcing (BPO). Hardware was still a neglected sector. "Our hardware demand is currently worth 1 trillion ($22 billion). But we produce only 400 billion (around $9 billion) worth of hardware," Puri told an IT awards ceremony. "Nearly 70 billion is exported. Which means we have to import 700 billion worth of hardware." By 2010, the demand will touch an unsustainable 4 trillion, predicted Puri. "The government needs to help out. The sector needs to cooperate with official agencies in a planned way to move ahead," he said. "I have told (Planning Commission Deputy Chairman) Montek Singh Ahluwalia that the three sectors (software, BPO and hardware) have to move together." Puri had won Dataquest's IT Man of the Year award in 2003.
