Bangalore: Older people tend to be happier, suggests a new research. Psychologists have called for better research on this theory, saying that older people tend to focus on and remember positive events, leaving behind negative ones.

Derek M. Isaacowitz, Psychologist of Northeastern University said, "There is a lot of good theory about this age difference in happiness, but much of the research does not provide direct evidence," on the links between such phenomena and actual happiness, as reported by Asian News International.

In an article in ‘Perspectives on Psychological Science’, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, late Fredda Blanchard-Fields of Georgia Institute of Technology and Isaacowitz demanded for a more rigorous research on this topic.

Researchers and authors have found that older people who are shown pictures of faces or situations tend to focus on and remember more of the happier memories than the negative ones. Other studies suggest that as people age, they seek out situations that will lift their moods, for instance, eliminating social circles of friends or acquaintances that might bring them down. Yet, another study finds that older adults learn to let go of loss and disappointment over unachieved goals and shape their goals toward greater well-being.
