Dhaka, Yangon to share submarine cable for IT connectivity

Dhaka: Bangladesh and Myanmar could share each other's under sea cable system, used for running the internet, whenever their own cable connectivity breaks down, according to a proposal put forward by Yangon. Bangladesh is examining the proposal received from Myanmar, New Age newspaper said Sunday quoting an official. Myanmar said it wanted to use Bangladesh's submarine cable in case of the failure of its cable and Bangladesh could use Myanmar's system in a similar situation. Yangon's proposal was sent to the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited in the first week of June, an official told the newspaper. A Myanmar delegation has visited Bangladesh in this regard, he said. Myanmar says inter-connectivity will foster growth in information and communications sectors with uninterrupted telecommunications services. Bangladesh got connected to the global submarine cable system May 21, 2006 at an approximate cost of $35.1 million. There have been a number of cases of disruption in the submarine cable system. Experts have been demanding a second submarine cable link as a stand-by.
