Despite Tsunami, tourism picks up in India

NEW DELHI: Despite the tsunami devastation, tourist arrival has increased in January with a increase of 14.5 percent in the month. According to a release by the tourism ministry, the country received 363,631 tourists in January and the sector earned 25.28 billion ($555 million) in foreign exchange. Last January tourist arrival was estimated to be about 317,510 and a year before that 274,215 tourists visited India, the release said. Tourist arrivals crossed the three million mark for the first time in 2004. The export earnings in January 2005 amounted to an increase of 26.5 percent in rupee terms over the corresponding month of 2004 and 25.5 percent in dollar terms over the same period, the data revealed.
