NEW DELHI: Delphi Corporation, a global major in mobile electronics and transportation components, Monday announced the expansion of its technical center in Bangalore as part of its growth strategy in India. As part of the expansion drive, the New York Stock Exchange-listed Delphi has increased the center's floor space, including offices and test laboratories, from 20,000 sq feet to over 60,000 sq feet, said a statement issued here. The expansion will allow Delphi to significantly increase workforce at the center that plays an important role in fulfilling the demand for embedded software in many of Delphi Corporation's fastest growing product lines, it added. "When we opened this center 22 months ago, the focus was clearly on software development. As the center grows, we will expand the scope of our activities into product engineering," said Jeff Owens, president of Delphi Delco Electronics. "Initially, the emphasis will be on a range of engine controls for both gasoline and diesel engine management systems, along with additional mobile multi-media products." Prakash Kulkarni, director of Delphi Technical Center, said: "The center's present strength in software development is being complemented with mechanical, electrical and systems engineering skills. "We are also adding mechanical test facilities. The center is thus poised to contribute further to Delphi's global product development activities." The Delphi center is also likely to become a Center of Expertise for the development of Web-based tools to automate engineering and business processes. Besides the Bangalore center, Delphi's other technical centers in Asia, which do component design and applications engineering, are in Japan, South Korea and Singapore. U.S.-headquartered Delphi's key customers in India include Maruti Udyog Limited, General Motors India, Fiat, Hindustan Motors, Volvo and Tata Engineering. Globally, Delphi has approximately 191,000 employees and operates 179 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 42 joint ventures and 32 technical centers in 41 countries.
