Delhi's per capita income twice national average: Dikshit

New Delhi: The annual per capita income in Delhi is twice the national average, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday said, citing the Human Development Report (HDR). "It is also a fact that only 14.7 percent of the population belong to BPL (below poverty level) category against the national average of 27.5 percent. On the other hand, the HDR report also indicates that 45 percent of the population resides in slums and resettlement colonies, Delhi's sex ratio of 821 is among the lowest in the country and it has 4.3 million workers in the unorganised sector with limited social security," she said. Dikshit said data of five million vulnerable families of the national capital would be available with the government in the coming year. "This would help to facilitate accurate budgeting and handling various departmental schemes for them," she told a seminar on Mission Convergence, which was organised for legislators, at the Delhi Secretariat here. The chief minister said that "mission convergence" would provide social justice in the best coordinated way to ensure that the under-privileged and the poor regularly receive welfare services for both sustainable growth and eradication of poverty though convergence of organising, joining forces, facilitating and making communities voices heard effectively, according to an official release. Mission convergence is an attempt to lay the foundation for the proper psychological, physical and social development of the poor and unheard communities, she added. The chief minister said that the nine Delhi Development Goals are to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal elementary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, strengthen Bhagidari and improve public safety. Several legislators and senior officers of the Delhi government were also present on the occasion.
