Deemed universities concerned about revenue
By
SiliconIndia,Monday, 08 March 2010, 19:01 Hrs
New Delhi: The Government appointed committee to review the functioning of deemed universities said that many private deemed universities are predominantly concerned about revenue generation rather than promoting academic and research activities.
The panel is headed by P N Tandon in its report, has also suggested setting up a national committee for fixing rational fee structure for deemed universities which can be reviewed from time to time. Most of the deemed universities have fee structure considerably higher than that recommended by the official fee structure committees established according to the Supreme Court directives. Many of them created their own fee structure committees to justify the exorbitant fees, according to the report which have been submitted to the apex court.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter tomorrow. The committee has found 44 of the 130 deemed universities to be unfit for the status while another 44 have been found deficient in many areas. It has recommended that the 44 deficient deemed universities should be given three years time to rectify their short comings while the deemed university status should be withdrawn from those found unfit.
"Except a few public-funded institutions, quality research is not done in any of the deemed universities. Research, which is a major component of university, is not being carried out by these institutions," said the report. It also stated that there is not a single example of technology transfer, generation of patents and intellectual property in these institutions. Even though the UGC guidelines speak about holding an all-India entrance test to enroll students, the deemed universities never follow any common entrance examination. They conduct their own entrance which is very often restricted to limited geographical locations or regions.
The committee has recommended that the highest governing body of the deemed universities should be headed by the vice-chancellor and should include distinguished academics and professionals as its members.

1: In the last five years (2005–09), SASTRA
has 302 publications in various journals in
addition to five patents as listed in the
Scopus database. The Committee has also
recorded in the report that the publication
data were downloaded from Scopus during the
review of the deemed universities. SASTRA is
ranked 12th University in Research (h-index)
including IISc, Banglore and TIFR, Mumbai,
and SASTRA is putted in the category of
Deficient Universities... No one here to see,
whats going on in India... Politics Sucks

4: bosses of govt. bodies like UGC , AICTE , DEC
etc are responsible for this and over and
above the HRD ministry. ALL are busy snoring
and enjoying the fun nothing is going to
happen with so much hue and cry. IIMs / IITs
and other premier institutes will continue to
maintain their standards and the lower rung
money minting ones will continue to garner
money which is their prime objective of being

8: It is very encouraging in our education that
we have so many higher education institutes
where students after completing school
education can get a seat. These universities
can follow the existing established
institutes for standard quality education and
make their institutes the prefered choice for
students by charging less.

12: Poor enforcement of regulations by the
regulatory authority for the obvious reasons
encourages private sector educational
insitutions to focus on their collections
only, for which they have the licence.
Students are also not discerning enough and
wish to get their degrees by hook or by
crook. As long as our people( ruling
class, business class and middle class all
included)do not overcome their greed, there
is no scope for improvement of the situation.

16: Deemed Universities are just money-minting
businesses and most of the UGC driven
universities are money-wasting lethargies,
with equally poor performance on academics,
research and meaningful publications. We
really do not need so many universities and
graduate studies in this country, that too
offering subsidised low standard education.
Degrees are invariably becoming a burden to
its holders. What we need in this country is
more vocational training centres which will
help young job seekers to learn a skill, such
as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, driving,
nursing, tailoring, computer programming,
language skills etc...

22:I don't agree with you Sharma. What you
thinking? Think big man. What you suggested
is just for food and living. We need highly
qualified research. If you have that type of
research then you will get lot of patents so
that the economical structure of the country
will grow. According to your thoughts we will
be in the least life style. You want to be a
labor rather than winner. What ever you
suggesting are basic needs for all but don't
stay at that level. Try to think Big and try
to expand your views.
This is the basic idea to start the universities but the problem is with corruption. Every body wants money they don't realize that if you are eating all at a early stage you can not get any thing at end. Mean time if you spend something for future then you will get more benefit. I am sure the guys running the institutes without research are looking present and they don't have future vision.
Now the govt. duty is to court these guys.

Screw up with their name in their Marriage

Almost all of the indians are selfish only...

All of us want money only, rather than what is happening ,(or) to whom it is happening.
here we are talking about deemed universities are as super markets
because they have the demand arround other universities(markets) by education,quality,infrastructure,hype,etc.. lot of students are ready to join there (by paying more money)
suppose if you or me a politician , we also will do the same .
but we are not a politician , so we are scolding politicians
As aswini said "Nobody care about india's future. At least dont expect any thing from government. Its only you and me who can change our attitude in order to change the world."
that is the only only only possible/perfect solution.

college heard the news of its name
shortlisted...The college is now becoming
more of a JAIL... u cant have a proper
break...We cant do this...we cant do that...I
agree Bunking is not good...But the faculty
says we need an affidavit to show that we
wont bunk again from now onwards...We get
written from HOD that we have taken a
leave..then also we need to make a call home
that a leave has been given or if we really
need it..We have 100 works that need to be
completed do we need to tell all of them at
home...Girls and boys cannot sot together..we
do not have proper facilities available..at
the end of submission of work we need to ruh
here and there spend 1000 of rupees ..this is
what we get after paying a huge amount of
fees... Treat us like trash..come this
time..come that time...provide with computers
that take 15 min to start..forget about the
work..
and the most important thing...we get atleast 4-5 minimum "dhamkis" threats everyday...that they wont give us marks..if we do this or that.....its basically...that we need to serve our faculty as GOD and be like a "Chamcha" than only we would get marks...otherwise they play with our career forget about education...

44: It is not only fees. The fines for
attendance, talking with girls, marks for
internal ass. are some of the revenue streams
of these institutions- they run in to crores
for some of the institutions.I have
higlighted only one of the stream. Purchase
of books and providing for students is
another revenue stream where booksellers
increase the price to accomodate 40%cut to
the managements. Filthy tactics to defraud
students. Some of these universities(?)in
Tamilnadu get students from far of places
such as UP and North east , where the
students have no information about these
institutions. The agents there show glossy
picture of the university and bring them here
to find lack of every resource including
basic amenities. The admission into M.Phill
and doctoral programmes is awfully fradulent
with mainstream academics in other
universities offering their name for
money. The study centres in far of places like
Jammu and kashmir conduct all examinations
for all degree courses in one room- and
degrees are provided for them with high
marks. While students from the mainstream
universities struggle to obtain first class-
these institutions offer marks for a
consideration. For any selection process in
Government jobs the marks are taken in to
consideration and many of these students who
obtain these degrees get jobs easily. The
persons with this kind of records join the
government service and you can imagine the
values sytems of these stuetns. These
institutions are social malice. While we are
complaining about treatment of our students
in Australia, imagine students of our own
country being put to greatest hardships. The
greatest fear is most of the universites are
run by people with criminal or political
record or with caste support. It is the nexus
of criminals-academics willing to sell
anything for cash-politicians-fradulent Human
resource managers selecting few for a
consideration that run these institutions.
The mafias of Italy will learn lessons from
these people. They are not teaching shops,
they are mafias in the guise of educational
entrepreneurs. It is government's resolve to
bring these mafias to end is laudable. Let us
support Kapil Sibal who is working on this
great task of cleaning the system. The total

will be thankful to Prof.Tandon,
Prof.Anandakrishnan and his team. Let the
people representing these people search their

46:1. Most study centres in J&K cheating
students belong to Govt universities
2. A large number, rather very large number of students are not willing to work hard and hence knowingly go to such shady places to get such cheap Degrees
3. Such Students from rich families go to Australia and UK
4. A large number of Govt. univ. are them selves involved in easy cash generation such as correspondence courses (E.g 5000 B.Ed students in Kashmir Univ in Distance B.Ed at a fee of Rs ), Very heavy service charges from students studying in private colleges. Exhorbitant admission form and late fee charges etc.
5. The Govt Univ. are also a mafia. Do not make the mistake of absolving them.

56: Trading education for money! The plight of
the present day student in most of the
colleges is really bad. fees are too high
apart from that hidden charges for hostels.
How is the student supposed to pay back
his/her loans?
With a huge population presently in the colleges with huge amounts of loans, the possibility of another dip in the economy could be possible unless colleges can equate their fees to the placement packages.

are the necessity of the time.
But, There is a big gap in what the value they add and the cost they charge. It is true to even many premier institutes in India. Majority of them still ride on the reputation they have created decades ago.
Most of the people coming out of the educational institutions are fit for nothing. World has moved forward from mere book education to leadership and entrepreneurship. Book knowledge is no longer considered a great asset. The world is looking for “Next Generation Leader” s.
Corporate today need leaders not employees, they need asset not liability

at UGC. The primarily problem lies with the
composition of the evaluating team that
visits the institutions.
In some cases though the UGC in its 'wisdom' overrules the findings of this team.
Revenue generation by private Indian academic institutions can be a management case study of the finest business model in this country.
Research etc are the window dressings. An institution that cobbles up a semblance of a faulty, as nearly all do, is miles away from a research program.
The recent brouhaha is owing to the critical comments both by Industry and Industry Associations on poor quality of graduates.

universities-MITS..I strongly believe my
college's standard and infrastructure,
faculty and teaching pattern, examination and
marking system, library, laboratory
practicals, project work etc. all are upto
the mark..they are one amongst the 50 best of
India's engineering colleges. Fee structure
is no doubt an issue but then, with kind of
hostel accomodation and facilities provided
to us, its not completely unreasonable as
well. The team visited our campus during
rakhi vacations and in that time when it took
feedback from no student or faculty, sat just
with the management, what kind of evaluation
it did, i have no idea..the committee worked
in a very negligent and careless manner and
is unknowingly playing with futures of many
students..admissions in our college are done
via AIEEE only..so I find no reason to call
my university a revenue driven organisation.
I have friends from other colleges, have been
to other colleges during fests n all and have
seen the standards and have drawn comparison
between ours and their's. I find my college
standing at a very good rating than their's
and still I find the name of my college in
the list and not their's. So, its just some
silly politics these committees are
playing..nothing more than that..probably its
some rivalry between the political parties as
our chairman belongs to the opposition while
our minister Mr. Kapil belong to the ruling
party..so might be due to some such reasons,
the college and its 1500 students have been
made a victim of this cheap politics..

kind of malpractices which goes on in Govt

As for the Privates Deemed universities, they were setup with the sole purpose of Porfit Making and not acedamic excellence.
"Education is a service Industry and is a huge profit making business", this is the approach of most of the Private Universities in India today. More so even the masses hav started to accept this as they are not left with any choice.
