DaimlerChrysler and Maharashtra Government in MoU

Mumbai: Joining in the sudden automobile market expansion in India is DaimlerChrysler signing an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the Maharashtra Government. The German auto major has signed a MoU with the State Government to set up a new manufacturing facility in Chakan MIDC area, Pune, to manufacture the C-class, E-class and S-class vehicles. On an individual model basis, the company sold 248 units (S-class), 922 units (E-class) and 883 units (C-class) with 180 CBUs (Completely Built Units) imported models. The company reported record sales of 2,100 units in 2006. Senior officials of the company informed that it would be fully operational by the first week of January 2009, but declined to comment on the funding details. The company has bought 100 acres from the State Government for its new operations. Initially, one-third of the land will be utilized for the manufacturing facility, which will have a production capacity of 5,000 units on a one-shift, annual basis. Chief Minister, Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh stressing the promises said, ?we promise to commit any help needed by the auto major". Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board of management, DaimlerChrysler AG, present at the occasion announced that the new plant is an important milestone for their operations in India.
