DU undergrads offered $69,000 package
New Delhi: Two undergraduate students, one each from the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and St. Stephen's of Delhi University (DU) have been offered jobs with a salary package of 32 lakh ($69,000) per annum each. The offers have been made by Germany based Deutsche Bank.

Both Adit Mathur and Sukrit are final year students of SRCC and St. Stephen's college respectively. The size of the offer made to a student from DU is what has made the cheerful difference to the ritual of foreign banks picking up students from Indian institutions; as such handsome offers are the perquisite of Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. The highest that a DU student has got in the past is 14 lakh from Lehman Brothers in 2007.

Following the placement, in an interview to Economic Times, Mathur said, "It was completely unexpected. I couldn't prepare much in advance, but brushing up the basics helped a lot." Both these students will be flying off to London next July for the Graduate Analyst Training Programme, where they will interact with several other students from across the globe.

This year, the placement scenario in Indian universities is much better than what it was last year. Last year, around 25 companies came with jobs but this year the college is expecting more than 35 companies. In the current session, DU has also introduced online registration system for those who desire to be placed. More than 8,000 students have registered with Central Placement Cell (CPC) so far.

Apart from this, SRCC has placed 40 undergrads and 14 post graduate students from its Global Business Operations course. At SRCC, where last year the minimum salary an undergraduate student was expecting was 2.2 lakh per year and a post-graduate student could look at 4 lakh, this year, the figure has doubled. About 20 students from the college have already been hired by several companies. Similarly, 20 final year students of St. Stephen's College have received job offers from reputed multinational financial companies like McKenzie and Bain Capital. Four students have got offers of 11.5 lakh per annum each at McKenzie, while four were absorbed by Bain Capital at a salary of 7.5 lakh per annum each.

Dr. PC Jain, Principal, SRCC, said, "We are not entertaining companies that are not offering good salaries. In this regard, we have already rejected the offer of two very good companies. It is expected that every student of SSRC will get two job offers before January."

Meanwhile, students from other colleges of the DU are also hoping for good placement offers this year. While 11 undergraduate Commerce students of Hans Raj College were hired by VKS, an affiliate of the United Bank of Switzerland, with salaries of about 4.5 lakh per annum each, 81 students have been shortlisted for interviews by Google. Institutes like Kirori Mal College (KMC), Daulat Ram, Hindu and Ramjas too have good companies lined up with jobs for students.

One thing is obvious from these forums. The pathetic knowledge of how to communicate properly and lack of language skills. The case is true whether the language in English or any Indian language.

It is also true that the overall quality of education is low among the people now. So, instead of talking about how many lakhs you should get, focus on how many lakh items you should improve before aspiring unjustifiably for something.

12: Good to see the news of these two guys. Getting good job for fresher(commerce grad.) in India considering current situation is very tough. If they are getting avarage salry wrt to GERMANY then whats wrong? If that bank has offered them 24 Lac PA (INR) then also its a good bet to join good company like Deutsche Bank. Any experience with such bank is good for their future. Friends just dont expect to see these two guys getting salary of manager post in 1st year itself.

A person of Indian origin living in a foreign country and working for a foreign country has to go thru lots of hurdles and very rarely gets into a management position. There is a built in bias which is hard to over come no matter how smart you are or how hard you work. Believe me I am talking from my personal experience. Stay in India even if you get less money but you will be happy in long run. I am living and working in US since last 49 years and if I could turn the clock back I would never leave India.

irwin, the thing is that everyone wants to get on to top...because everyone works hard..but world works in a different way..look, below an american guy is saying the hard ship which they are facing and this happens everywhere..even i had to face it even though i had got admission in a good T-School of india for my POST GRADUATE EDUCATION..we all presume that all americans will be on top etc..but this is not true..even outsourcing business is something else..it was the lobby of corporations and not that americans did not want to do the jobs etc..these things are played by those who are powerful and have money to buy decisions...i have seen americans also working very hard than japanese but we are told something else right

I am an American and all I can say is that these people are lucky to have gotten jobs. Most of our American college students graduate now, cannot find jobs, and have to return home to live with their parents. There are simply too few jobs available. And Irwins, I agree that there is probably some bias, but you must realize that there are also many very qualified Americans right now who are working at jobs that are well below their skill levels. I was a director who brought $140M into a business and I had 20 subordinates. Unfortunately, regardless of my accomplishments, I got laid off because my boss wanted to put his friend into my position. I am now working in a low level position and I feel lucky to have THAT job. So, don't think you are alone with your difficulties. In America right now, Americans are just lucky to have ANY job they can get. And these are very skilled people, not just hacks. America is not the place to be right now.

48: Guys... try to understand the equation behind the package.. when you convert a package which is earned in dollars or GBP into INR it will look sky high. Its because of the conversion rate which is amazingly high. When a local of US or Germany or UK is hired in there country for the same post and with the same degree they get a much higher package than the Indians. Again after the 30% tax deduction that every migrants pay... the package is lower to 23 lacks that is $48000. So yes its a brilliant achievement and my congratulation to them .... but in the longer run the rise of corporate ladder is tough outside than in india being an indian and the job profile will speak for them as people who find job aborad know it very well whats the scenario. So my advice would be eat them but eat them big... get some experience or an MBA then join at a better post and rob them.

I'm happy for those two guys who got the offer... they have the talent and have got the opportunity to work with an International bank. But there is nothing more to it when it comes to the salary package... 32L rupees (or Euro 45000) p.a is not a big deal in Germany.

I stay in Frankfurt (temporarily), and considering the cost of living here, I think this package is just average and ll help to survive in Germany, there might not be much savings initially. Its our indian tendency to convert the currency and get astounded...

I'm not discouraging such offers... Really appreciate them for their talent and placement with Deutsche bank... But my only advice is just remain grounded, this package is required to survive in a different country...

ya its great news,but here lots of question may arises as mentioned above that y they cant be selected by indian company,& why only 2 r selected,it may be coz that bank want to take the place of lehaman brothers coz this bank is following the same way as lehman brothers did.but we should appreciate this 2 student for there placement & i hope the answer of my question will be solved .&truly speaking anyhow this much placement is not offered in iim as well as iit.it may be an exception.& may be college has good contact with that bank trust.
