Computer sales see 19 percent hike

New Delhi: Sales of desktop computers and notebooks in India crossed 2.96 million units in the second quarter of this fiscal to a record 19 percent growth over the same period last year, says a report by a leading industry body. Demand was highest from telecom, banking and financial service sectors, education, retail and BPO/IT-enabled services, and also from major e-governance initiatives of the Union and state governments, said a review by Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT). PC sales are expected to touch 6.5 million in fiscal 2006-07 due to an upbeat mood of the market, it said. Notebook sales recorded a growth of 180 percent that accounted for over 15 percent of the total PC market, is growing faster due to affordability. Servers posted a growth of 16 percent over the first-half of the last financial year, due to high consumption by the large establishments where sales increased by 115 percent accounting for 56 percent of the total servers market. Internet penetration in the top 22 cities was 45 percent among businesses and 14 percent among households, the report said.
