Seven days after the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) alleged the presence of pesticides in 12 top soft drink brands, the sales of carbonated drinks - especially colas - have registered a sharp 30-40 per cent drop.

DELHI: According to a report published in Economic Times, The sales drop has been computed by comparing the last one week’s sales as against the average weekly sales prior to the CSE report. Sales have been worst affected in Kolkata where leading clubs, restaurants and retailers have either stopped selling aerated drinks or are reluctant to sell them due to the fear of being on the wrong side of public opinion. In Delhi, Chennai and several other cities, a number of schools and colleges have stopped sale of aerated drinks in the canteen or tuck shops, said the report. Even in schools where sale of these drinks has not been stopped, hardly any kids are seen drinking them. Concerned parents are keeping their kids away from colas, while a well-known school in Delhi is staging regular skits to make the students aware of the colas’ ‘ill-effects’. The cola companies are obviously worried, but are playing down the impact, it said. “There is no perceptible difference in our sales. The marginal dip, if at all, could be due to the lean monsoon season,” a Coca-Cola spokesperson was quoted as saying. But Pepsi was candid. “The baseless allegations have impacted our sales,” its spokesperson said.
