Kochi: The stage is set for the second India International Coir Fair (IICF) 2007 beginning here Dec 7. The fair, to be attended by 125 buyers from 35 countries, is expected to generate business worth $25 million (993 million), said a top official. "We initially expected 75 buyers but now we have got more than 125 buyers from 35 countries," Choir Board chairman A.C. Jose told IANS. The five-day event will bring together Indian coir product manufacturers, technology providers and machinery manufacturers, and overseas buyers. "We hope that this exercise would create an exposure of $25 million for coir products," said Jose. IICF is touted as a global platform for the coir industry since India accounts for 90 percent of the world's production of coir, which is exported to 97 countries. Kerala alone accounts for 80 percent of the exports. Coir exports have grown hugely in the past few years with business touching more than 6 billion at the end of fiscal 2006-07, up from 3.5 billion in 2002-03. "The product portfolio includes mats, matting, carpets, rugs, rubberised coir mattresses, needled felt and geo-textiles. New generation products like coco pits, garden articles and wood substitutes, which have immense growth prospects, would also be on display," added Jose.
