CHENNAI: An engineering company in the Tamil Nadu city of Coimbatore claims to have manufactured India's first micro-turbine. Based on the plans of a jet turbine, the micro-turbine can power a cycle and any small vehicle. UMS Services Limited says it has developed a module with a high-speed microprocessor and software that regulates speed and temperatures, allowing the turbine to function better. The company's chief, G.D. Gopal, says India is only the fourth country in the world to have a commercially viable micro-turbine. The new turbine develops a thrust of 27 pounds and runs at 110,000 rpm (revolutions per minute). It uses the cheaper fuel kerosene and can use a remote controlled self-starter. It is eco-friendly and can be used for bigger vehicles by converting to gas-based propulsion fuel. UMS Services says the easy-to-use turbine can be put to commercial use in rural India and for defence vehicles too.
