Civil work nearing completion for fast reactor

Kalpakkam: Major civil works relating to the 
35 billion 500 MW prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam is nearly over, a top official said Thursday.
"The project is in an interesting stage. While civil construction is nearing completion, most of the reactor components are at the site. Deliveries of other equipment is also expected," Baldev Raj, director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), told reporters here Thursday.
According to Raj, all the research and development work has been completed by IGCAR, the agency that developed the fast reactor technology.
The fast reactor project is being built by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam LTd (Bhavini), a joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and IGCAR.
"The main vessel will be lowered sometime next month. We have to create a clean room situation before lowing it. Following that will be the inner vessel," Bhavini project director Prabhat Kumar said.
In June, the huge safety vessel (200 tonne, 13 meter diameter and 13 meter height) was lowered into the reactor vault - the first non-civil work to be done for the project.
According to Kumar, the fast reactor will start generating power sometime in 2010.
Meanwhile IGCAR, Bhavini and Madras Atomic Power Station (Maps) have extended their support to a vocational training course in non-destructive testing.
The 180-hour course is jointly organised by Quality Through Non-Destructive Evaluation Science and Technology (Qunest), a trust, and Kanchi National Child Labour Project Society (KNCLPS) - a state government body - for the youth living Kanchipuram district.
"The first batch will have 104 trainees. This training will improve the skill sets and also the employability of the youth," said K.Bhoopathi, secretary, KNCLPS.
The training is open for those who have passed the 10th and 12th standard examinations or are IT-trained.
