CHENNAI: Chinese mobile telephone manufacturer Bird is talking to several Indian companies to introduce new handsets in the Indian market. The Chinese company is planning to introduce 10 new models of handsets in the Indian market by New Year, Bird International Director Jean-Alexis Chatelain said here. He is here to launch four state-of-the-art handset models, including the world's slimmest model, S-288, in Chennai. The company will introduce a new range of cellular phones in a price range of 4,000 and less by next month, Chatelain said. In the premium segment, a personal digital assistant (PDA) model, with voice, data and video, will be launched in India later this year, the official said. The company estimates that the mobile phone market in India is increasing by 100 percent every year. "Our company will be introducing more and more products in India in the next few years," Chatelain said. "We are in talks with several operators and are near to finalising a deal with one major player," he added. Bird is also exploring the possibility of setting up a software development centre in Bangalore. The company was set up in 1992 in Ningbo, China, to manufacture pagers and began making cell phones in 1998. So far, the company with a turnover of $2.5 billion, has sold 17 million units. It exports one million sets to countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia.
