New Delhi: Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram last week inaugurated the Border Security Force's (BSF) 229 crore intranet project, which facilitate its personnel to easily access their personal data and administrative work online from wherever they are posted. Launching the state-of-the-art data centre of the project at BSF headquarters here, Chidambaram said: "The new initiative will be useful for efficient office management and quick decision making." The Intranet Prahari Project (IPP) executed by NIIT Technologies Ltd. has extended up to 237 locations of the central police force and will benefit about 195,000 BSF personnel. "I congratulate the BSF for commencing this IPP facility. It will be an extraordinarily useful tool for administration of fast service for the force. It will also help in internal security duties. I hope this project will improve the quality of administration in the BSF," Chidambaram said. Through the IPP programme, all frontiers and battalions across the country would be connected to one another. "It has many, many applications and one of the greatest interest of the personnel will be that all their personal information will be available (on the system) like salary allowances, tax deductions and leaves," Chidambaram said. He also said that the idea of this computer-based system is to move towards paperless office. "Introducing a computer-based system should not mean that papers will continue to be generated. Once records are available in the digital form, that must mean end of paper form." The project will also computerise the whole account system, including the the movement and deployment of forces. "Apart form all these benefits, the project will help in decision making process as the force commanders and the sector commanders can be in close touch with the BSF senior officials at the headquarters," the home minister said. NIIT Technologies Ltd. has trained about 20,000 BSF personnel on the fundamentals of computers and on the software application developed under the project. "As of now, they have already about 3,000 people logging in. Hope many more will log in future," Chidambaram said. The home minister also added that the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has a similar proposal for its personnel.
