CHENNAI: It seems like the government has finally realized that hazards caused by e-waste or Waste from Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) may assume dangerous proportions over the next few years if it continues to be left unaddressed. For, the Tamil Nadu Technology and Development and Promotion Center (TNTDPC) along with CII have now worked out on designs to set up an e-waste processing plant in Chennai. A blueprint for the plant, which includes guidelines for preliminary planning and technology related help, has been submitted to the State government. About 10,000 sq ft space is the requisite for the plant with an additional 5,000 sq ft for a depot facility. “We have submitted a document to the State government asking for land near IT and manufacturing companies,” said Kavita Vemuri, Councilor and Head, TNTDPC. She said that the response from IT and manufacturing companies have been positive. However, the center was looking out for partners to fund the venture, as the project would cost nearly $13.63 million, she added. Under the new proposal, manufacturers would be expected to pay for the goods they manufacture that would eventually become e-waste. The plant, which is expected to be operational by December this year, is expected to provide reverse engineering technology to process two tones of e-waste a day. The CII is also working with a Ukrainian joint venture company, Britannica for technology transfer linking use of segregated plastics to manufacture tiles.
