BADDI (Himachal Pradesh): A 500 million packaging material plant will soon start functioning in Himachal Pradesh in what is said to be the first such unit in Asia. "The unit is only the third of its kind in the world and the first in Asia," Pradeep Rathod, director of Wimplast Ltd, a Mumbai-based firm with diverse interests in houseware, furniture and writing instruments, said Thursday. Wimplast has tied up with Reliance Industries to set up the plant to manufacture "celloguard plastic cartons for packaging horticulture produce and electronic, IT and other white goods," Rathod told IANS. The foundation of the plant was laid Thursday in the industrial town of Baddi by state Horticulture Minister Singhi Ram and was attended by top officials of Wimplast and Reliance besides leading apple farmers from the Shimla hills and Kullu valley. "The plant will start producing celloguard plastic cartons by May this year and will manufacture 10 million cartons every year," Rathod said. "Besides producing cartons for apples, plums, cherries, walnuts, pomegranates and oranges, electronic goods can also be packed in these cartons," he said. "The celloguard plastic cartons will revolutionise the concept of packaging in the country," he said. "These cartons are functionally and aesthetically superior to the conventional system, apart from being waterproof - which is the major cause of the failure of cartons," Rathod claimed. "This would help the country in saving fruit losses which is estimated at a quarter of the total production," he added. "Once Himachal farmers adopt these plastic cartons instead of paper cartons, the apple industry in the state will save 2 billion," said Sagar Verma, general manager, Reliance Industries. "Countrywide the apple industry alone will save a whopping 15 billion by saving 130 million paper cartons that burden forests," said Verma. Reliance Industries is a blue chip company along with Wimplast, which is a Mumbai-based firm with diverse interests in houseware, furniture and writing instruments. Wimplast has a gross sales turnover of over 7 billion annually.
