Cargill Asia-Pacific president elected to USIBC board

Washington: The U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) Monday announced the election of Paul Conway, senior vice president of Cargill Inc. and president, Cargill Asia Pacific Holdings, to its Board of Directors. Cargill with reported 2007 sales of $88 billion has been doing business in India for over 20 years and currently employs over 1,100 people across India. "Paul Conway's appointment to the USIBC board represents the increased focus that the Council is placing on matters related to rural development in India, and on the advancement of the food and agriculture systems in both countries," said USIBC chairperson Indra Nooyi. "The private sector has an important role to play in contributing to a more synergistic trade and investment relationship between the US and India in the food and agriculture space," the India-born chairperson of Pepsico said. "Paul brings deep insight and knowledge of the industry to the Board, and will provide valuable leadership on the best approaches for strengthening the food and agriculture systems in both countries," she added. Speaking about his appointment to the USIBC Board of Directors, Conway said: "I look forward to working with the USIBC and its member companies from both the US and India on the important issues of bilateral trade, investment and rural development. "Cargill brings a world of experience to India on issues relating to food, agriculture, and risk management." According to USIBC, under Conway's leadership in the Asia-Pacific region, Cargill's investments and activities in India have grown in the areas of edible oil refining and distribution, animal nutrition, sugar refining, fertilisers and risk management; amongst others, Paul Conway became a senior vice president and member of Cargill's global Corporate Leadership Team in October 2006. He also moved to Asia as president and regional director in January of that year. He joined Cargill from Law School in 1979 and has held a number of merchandising roles in the United Kingdom, USA and Switzerland before becoming a Division Head of UK corn processing in 1989. Throughout the 1990's Conway worked in the European food processing businesses becoming executive vice president of Cargill's European Food Processing Businesses in 1997. Cargill is a Chairman's Circle member of the USIBC, a leading business advocacy organisation seeking stronger commercial ties with India. USIBC represents 280 of the largest US companies investing in India, joined by two dozen of India's largest global companies. Headquartered in Wayzata, Minnesota, Cargill is a global provider of food, agriculture and risk management products and services. The company employs 158,000 people in 66 countries.
