NEW DELHI: Domestic car sales rose by a modest 6.7 per cent in August 2003 as market leader Maruti, Fiat and Hindustan Motors suffered a decline even as Hyundai and Tata Motors posted improved performance. Total sales rose for the fifth consecutive month this fiscal to 53,177 units from 49,828 units in the same month last year, data released today by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. Cumulative (April-August 2003) sales was 26.3 per cent higher at 2,62,678 cars against 2,07,938 units a year earlier, the data showed. The August sales were lower by 11 per cent as compared to 59,800 cars sold in July this year. Car sales have been on the upswing this year due to lower prices following an eight per cent tax cut in the budget, easy finance schemes and launch of new models. Sale of trucks and buses surged by 39.3 per cent in August to 19,967 units from 14,328 units a year ago on the back of strong demand for both light and heavy vehicles. Cumulative sales in this segment went up by 28.7 per cent year-on-year to 86,182 units from 66,934 units. Sale of two-wheelers grew by 7.1 per cent in August to 4,17,479 units as motorcycles and scooters witnessed higher demand while mopeds continued their downward trend.
