Can Hadron Collider be world's first time machine?
Washington: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest atom smasher that started regular operations last year, could be the first machine capable of causing matter to travel backwards in time.

'Our theory is a long shot,' admitted Tom Weiler, physics professor at Vanderbilt University, 'but it doesn't violate any laws of physics or experimental constraints'.

One of the major goals of the collider is to find the elusive Higgs boson - the particle that physicists invoke to explain why particles like protons, neutrons and electrons have mass.

If the collider succeeds in producing the Higgs boson, some scientists predict that it will create a second particle, called the Higgs singlet, at the same time, according to a Vanderbilt statement.

According to Weiler and Chui Man Ho's theory, these singlets should have the ability to jump into an extra, fifth dimension where they can move either forward or backward in time and reappear in the future or in the past.

'One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes,' Weiler said.

'Because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example.

'However, if scientists could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future,' added Weiler.

Weiler and Ho's theory is based on the M-theory, a 'theory of everything'. A small cadre of theoretical physicists have developed the M-theory to the point that it can accommodate the properties of all the known subatomic particles and forces, including gravity.

But it requires 10 or 11 dimensions instead of our familiar four. This has led to the suggestion that our universe may be like a four-dimensional membrane or 'brane' floating in a multi-dimensional space-time called the 'bulk'.

1: However, I dont agree with Mahadeva S Sarma.

Mathematical reality may or may not be physical reality. But what ever we know, has been because we are mad eto believe what we know by our limited resources.

Let me put it this way - we have two eyes so we are aware of three dimensions. We age and so we have the time sense.

Think about an endless life, for example, we will just not have time sense.

I am saying that because even modern physics can now not be understood the way we are trying to percieve it.

You actually need spiritual tools to understand it. Actually, this is the time when Science and spirituality meet, because their purpose is same - evolution !

Sound funny ? It is. But then every new thing sounds either funny or intimidating !

Cant help it !

3: If a particle created in a piece of equipment does "travel" back and forth in "time" Is it still real time that one is talking about. It may just be a travel in Mathematical Time. As much as I have read and understood the contemporary Physics of M-theory being fashioned out as a Theory of Everything(ToE)-- of course I must admit, albeit at a a pop-science level not with all the Mathematical Paraphernalia of the Equations dealing with the 11-Dimensions et al.-- it all looks like giving mathematical reality a physicality! In earlier days, we were either clearly told by good teachers, or we would learn it the very hard, hard knocks way, that Mathematical Reality has no connection whatsoever to reality- at least none is professed- and one must carefully weigh the "meanings" arising out of the "mathematical objects" while applying them to reality out there! In the New Physics this seems to have been given the go by.

4: I have a doubt based on the following write up written in the article: -----According to Weiler and Chui Man Ho's theory, these singlets should have the ability to jump into an extra, fifth dimension where they can move either forward or backward in time and reappear in the future or in the past.

'One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes,' Weiler said.

If scientist were able to send a message to the past using the singlet particles. what if a scientist sends a message to himself in the past to not to proceed create any singlet particles. Now since the message used singlet particles, how is this not a paradox. Then, how does the this mode of time travel avoid paradoxes altogether. I am confused.

5: The Higgs Boson is elusive particle, its just a assumption based on the theory of relativity involving permutations and mathematical relationships. So far we have no conclusive defination of Higgs boson its just an hypothetical assumption. If LHDC experiment explains its existence than modern physics will be considered moving in the right direction. If this particle is not validated by LHDC, scientific fraternity will be baffled , perhaps what so little we knew about the existence of universe could be mere considered just an hypothetical idea by earlier Physicist rather than a start point.

6: its gr8 to hear that it wud b so beneficial..if we cud use both 4th nd 5th dimensions to send messages back nd forth in time with d help of dis mighty particle it will b amazing bt it will really require to make gr8 research of 5th dimension becoz as of now we dont have its real implementations.
