Bangalore: Can corporate leadership equate to political leadership? Can People, who built global appreciation for a company, also craft the future of a nation? Can the CEO of a company who fires employees, put people back to work when he becomes the President of a country? The answer from most of us is a resounding "Yes," but what we fail to remember before we concur is the crucial difference that Corporate and Government are two different turfs to play on.
The corporate world is ruled by capitalism whereas the political world is ruled by societal obligations. Each corporate enterprise defines a set value which the shareholders and company management agrees upon which can be measured in monetary terms whereas obtaining public values is a lot more complicated mission for politicians. The most critical difference is the scale in which they are measured. Any decision taken by politicians will affect millions of people whereas a CEO has a smaller number to answer.
The strong need for corporate leaders in politics is to see government build better policies, improve urbanization and industrialization. As these leaders take top positions in the public sector, they can locate systemic problems and provide first-rate solutions. They can also change the inward looking mindset of the government to the outer world for a much bolder feedback and candid opinions. This will force the government to be more transparent in all their doings and will improve their performance.
Paralysis in policy decisions and government inaction on important economic issues has been a matter of debate in the recent past.
