C-DAC restructuring to focus on R&D

BANGALORE: The Dept. of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India has announced the merger of Electronics Research & Development Center, India (ER & DCI), National Center for Software Technology (NCST) and Centers for Electronics Design and Technology, India (CEDTI), Mohali with C-DAC with effect from December 16, 2002. The restructured C-DAC would consolidate the focus on R&D. It is also expected that the merger will offer economies of scale and avoid duplication of work. According to Shri R K Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC, "The merged autonomous society is targeted to emerge as a center of excellence of international repute working in advanced information technologies." "The areas of R&D focus would include High Performance Computing (HPC). Hardware & Embedded systems, Information Security, Digital / Broad Bank Wireless Communication, IT Applications Natural Language Processing, Multilingual Technologies, Knowledge Management & Software Engineering, Geomatics and Real time Systems & Software. Training and education will continue to remain an integral activity of the merged society", he added. The Society will integrate its R&D, applications, development and training to deliver output and optimal levels in this activity. A National Cyberspace Academy (NCA) is envisaged using a hybrid model of conventional classroom training and modern e-learning training to impart high-end courses in the diverse areas of IT. The merger of the societies into C-DAC came into effect on December 16, 2002.
