CHENNAI:The Center for Development of Advanced Computing has launched “Tamil Software Tools and Fonts” the first of its kind software that will help bridge digital divide and help masses communicate in their own language. Minister of Communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran said, "The lack of availability of fonts in Indian languages had been the biggest hurdle. The development and the release of Tamil fonts, has marked the beginning of the language computing era in India." Tamil language fonts are the first of the series to be released. "This would soon be followed by the release of fonts in 22 other Indian languages. This would reduce the digital divide that is prevailing in the country," Maran further observed. "Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is now in the process of developing online translation service tools, which would convert English to Indian languages and vice-versa. Besides, C-DAC is also in the process of developing speech Interfaces for Systems, which would recognize human voice and convert it to text for information extraction," Maran said.
