CBI detains senior Income Tax officials for alleged graft

New Delhi: CBI today detained a joint commissioner and an inspector of the Income Tax department here in an alleged corruption case. CBI sources said Arun Gurjar, a 1999 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, and Baljit Singh, inspector, were detained following a complaint from a grain merchant. Singh was apprehended while accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant at the office of Gurjar. The joint commissioner was out for a meeting when the money was being given. Sources said Singh had told the complainant that the money was for the senior official. They said the complainant had alleged that the senior officer was seeking money for issuing a lower assessment order and not imposing any penalty. The amount allegedly demanded by the officials was Rs five lakh, sources added.
