Buses too attracting visitors at Auto Expo

New Delhi: The 
100,000 ($2,500) Tata Nano is not the only automobile attracting the hundreds of thousands of visitors at the Auto Expo 2008. Foreign participants with their offerings are also grabbing eyeballs.
A plethora of companies ranging from Ashok Leyland, Swaraj Mazda, Tata Motors, Volvo and Force Motors have showcased a series of swanky and jazzy buses meant for public transport that can change the way people commute in India.
Various auto companies at the expo that concludes Wednesday have displayed all buses with executive and economy classes, Internet connectivity, digital display of information, and rear camera viewings.
This year the expo also witnessed large-scale international participation from countries such as Canada, Japan, Taiwan and the European Union.
"Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association is participating at the Auto Expo for the first time and are very impressed at the magnanimity of the event and are looking forward to participate again at the 10th Auto Expo in 2010," the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), one of the organisers of the event, said in a statement.
"A delegation of 26 companies of the UK automotive industry, which accounts for 11 percent of UK's total exports, is in India to explore business opportunities at the 9th Auto Expo," CII said.
This year for the first time a special pavilion has been put up to showcase garage equipments.
The garage equipment market is valued at 4 billion, including the two-wheeler segment, and is expected to grow at 15 percent growth year-on-year for the next five years, according to the industry body.
"The garage equipment industry is growing with the rise in automotive industry and with the two wheeler segment boom, its just getting better," said M. Kalaichelvan, joint managing director of Manatec, a Puducherry-based automotive garage equipments manufacturer.
Educational institutions such as the Amity University, IIT-Delhi, NID Allahabad, Delhi College of Engineering, and SPA (School of Planning and Architecture), BIT MISRA and R V College have all together put up seven stalls at the expo to showcase their creativity in car designing.
IIT Delhi has come with up with two models on display, one is the IIT-Delhi Baja Car, a sturdy terrain vehicle which can be used for rough, muddy and bumpy tracks, while the other one is a racing car.
Amity University have showcased India's first Tri-Fuel Hybrid Concept car. The car runs at 80-90 km on batteries on a single charge with maximum speed of 50 km per hour on batteries and 45 km per hour on engine.
