London: A team of British engineers plans to build a car that will run at the speed of 1,600 km an hour, outracing a handgun bullet. The ambitious project comes from the team that holds the world's land speed record and has the full backing of the Science Minister Lord Drayson, who believes it will be an inspiration to young people looking for a career in science or engineering, The Independent daily reported Thursday. Led by project engineer Richard Noble, the team hopes to build the supercar that exceeds the current speed record of 1591 km per hour for low altitude flight and will take 85 seconds to go from zero to its optimal speed and back to zero. The 14 metre long vehicle, technically speaking, will run faster than sound which travels at 1225 km. The car body will have to withstand air pressures exceeding 12 tonnes per square metre as it covers a distance equivalent to four football pitches in a second.
