THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Science and mathematics education in Kerala is set for a major boost, thanks to the efforts of a state-run institution. The Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) has taken several steps to reinforce science and mathematics education. KSCSTE Executive Vice-President M.S. Valiathan told reporters here Saturday that a School of Mathematics would soon be set up. "The department of atomic energy has accepted our proposal and extended a one time grant of 45 million. We are on the look out for land. The institute will be based in Trissur district," said Valiathan, an eminent builder. The KSCSTE was set up soon after the Congress party came to power in May 2001. It operates on the lines of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in New Delhi. KSCSTE's first attempt to introduce special laboratories in government schools on an experimental basis has already managed to strengthen infrastructure in subjects like physics, chemistry and biology. "The standard of these subjects was poor," said Valiathan. "We have set up new laboratories in 36 schools in the state and we expect government funds so that the infrastructure could be extended to all the 2,500 schools in Kerala. The exercise should be over by 2006." The KSCSTE has also selected 10 colleges for a grant of 2 million each for building necessary infrastructure. A 60-km model inland waterway is also being developed in north Kerala. "The waterway would be in place by 2005," said Valiathan.
