Blunderous CVs head to dustbin, knock out jobs
By

Bangalore: Recession is in, jobs are a rarity, but applicants are plenty. In such a cut throat race the need to have an error free CV (Curriculum Vitae) is very important. "Candidates today are trying to make their resumes different and impressive, so that they stand out. In the process, they end up making major blunders. A badly written resume ends up in the dustbin, completely knocking out the candidate's chance of getting a job," says Surabhi Mathur Gandhi, General Manager, Permanent Staffing, TeamLease Services.

A recent research done by TeamLease Services, a staffing company found that 90 percent of the randomly selected 500 CVs had 'some or the other form of error.' With piles of job applications available to HR managers, it is doubtful if erroneous CVs would be entertained.
Here are few of the top blunders made in a resume:
1. Biography: Marital Status - Yes
2. I laugh easily, but do not suffer fools gladly. I expect the same effort as others as I give myself.
3. Weakness: Fresher
4. Interests: Open to learn, make others laugh and feel happy, enjoys the nature.
5. Family details: Father - Death
6. Objective: To always spread positively within the branch and reduce the grape vine.
7. Notice Period: Minimum two (1) month.
8. Career Objective: To consistently develop by learning and sharing skills with a focus on the ultimate objective in order to achieve higher goals in conjunction with the growth of the organization and to set a name and be recognized in the industry.
9. Marital Status: Marriage
10. Profile: To prepare the whole film production plane and financing plane.
11. Contact Email: www.aradhana@rediffmail.com
12. Areas of strength: My background to date has been centered on grooming myself as a well-rounded person.
13. I am quietly forceful, original and sensitive.
14. Languages known: English (Good), Malayalam (Native), Hindi and Tamil.
15. Career Objective: Seeking a final placement in any organization to untilize the plethora of skills I have developed during my whole career.
The study revealed that many resumes are written in great haste and no attention is paid to detail. Candidates in an attempt to impress go overboard and consequently make a mockery of their bio-data. "The situation worsens when candidates make silly mistakes due to sheer oversight and sometimes overconfidence. A CV is the first piece of information about a candidate that reaches the potential recruiter. It is always advisable to have one's bio-data proof read and checked by professionals, or someone proficient in English," adds Surabhi.
So, is your CV blunder free?

2: First of all, I would like to thank SI to
share this valuable info.
I've gone through all the comments. After being into recruitment for one and a half year, I would say, a consultant looks at the person's resume thoroughly to check on desired skill set and then check on other details.
As an HR Consultant I guide the candidates as to what are the mistakes in their resumes and what exactly should be the content. In fact, many a times, I've corrected the resumes myself.
What I've realized from my small stint in recruitment is, "What matters at the end of the day is that if you've find the right person. Although communication plays a vital role in selection, but first priority is given to the skill-set. Eg: For a developer, communication is important when the profile requires him to be the contact point of the clients"
Also, for the candidates who neglect communication to be a check list for selection, I would say, there is nothing wrong in admitting for bad communication rather than getting reject because of it. It is always good to realize the weakness and improve on it.
All the best buddies!
Keep Finding Right.

3:Thanks to SI and Meenal putting your valuable
suggestion upfront for Career starters and
strugglers as well.
I am working as a Staffing Specialist for US process.
Few things every student need to think before hitting a job.
1. Please know your passion: Please waste your time to know your passion, but dont waste your time for developing the passion.
2. Reading and Browsing: Read as many books you can and browse the relevant data or info you need, dont sit infront of the computer just to chat, flirt or watch pronography. Reading articles gives a great information and atleast you are updated what's going in and around the world interms of IT.
If you are not confident about your english communication skills, please invest some money and take a great training. Without this please dont go for other countries just to whipe off your parent tears or just for just time pass. I see in a day around 200-300 resumes, there are many H1's who cannot speak a word in english need a job in US. I dont know what to say them, there are many moments where i told them upfront about there communication skills, but as a recruiter we feel very bad to raise a finger on the candidate who is in need of job.
3) Resume preparation: Make it sensable with no spelling errors, because recruiter will not have time to see each and every resume or do a spell check as he needs to close many positions inturn your resume will be moved to recycle Bin or just kept aside atleast not having a phone call from the recruiter. Make it more specific and whatever you think which gives you a great weightage put that in the resume. Any doubts you can contact people who knows a better english or who has good years of industry experience.
There are manythings to share however i feel these are the basics.
Any doubts you can mail me @chevendra@in.com i would be more than happy to clear those....
Regards
Raja

4: Resume' writing is passe'.C'mon guys/gals in
India "jago re jago".What you require today
is a skill set which highlights ALL the
skills you may have acquired over a time
period.Your skills have nothing to do with
your fancy degrees you may have earned over a
time period. For example if you know how to
fly an aeroplane then you may be eligible for
the pilots job (though subsequently you will
be formally trained by your employer to
dovetail your skill into his organisation).I
know many guys who are computer freaks but
they have No formal education in their skill
set field. These days organisations prefer to
employ such guys than those who have just
theoretical knowledge. These skills may or
may not be suitable for the post you may have
applied for.This new process automatically
narrows down the search for both the job
seekers, as well as, the prospective
employers. This way NO applicant can cheat
about his skills, which is often being done
by cooking up Resume's.

5:It is true that grammatical and spelling
mistake or say obvious mistakes in CVs should
never be entertained. But this should not be
the only criteria in choosing the aspirants.
In big country like India where still 60-70%
population live in villages and does their
basic schooling in local language, you
cann\'t expect them to be adept in writing
english. I believe MNC should focus more on
their JOB requirements rather than useless
english prophiciency, and based on that
aspirants should be shorlisted. Someone
heading for pure technical profile, what is
the need of knowing A to Z of english grammer
or profound oratory skill in english, for
Christ sake, its not a call centre.
Manageable english is enough.
Just to tell you, nobody in world speaks worst english than Korean and Japanese do. Still they have the best of MNCs in electronic market. Its not like you will stop buying their products just because their english is bad or you can find some alien character or badly phrased english sentences in their commodities
It is more with we indians where english is given such a commanding emplacement, where person\'s smartness or intelligence level is judged based on his/her english proficiency.
Who knows you might be missing some very intelligent and good brain because of obsessiveness in beautifully drafted English CV.
I have personally met few people from remote villages of Bihar and Andhra whose english is not good at all but very good technical aspects. They are just too good.
I hope someday time will come when people will be able to draft their CVs in local languages.

was faking by seeing his passout year and

9: Excellent! Companies dump the Blunderous
CV\'s in the dustbin, dump the people who are
lacking in intelligent and creativity in the
companies. Result dump the whole organisation
in the dustbin.
It all depends on the designation and job profile, a software developer is more intelligent in technical skills but lacking much in English skills or mistakes in CV, could you avoid the man for the company? yes the big companies done the same mistake the reason the small and mid size companies came into competition on power with the Big Brothers in the same field.
The job profile more into writing or framing of mails or talking to the clients or customers directly then its logic to go for error less resumes or nil mistake while talking.Especially country like India English is a second language you cannot access the person\'s intelligence or creativity in the resume or writing skills.
I know some of the top level or middle level employees who are most worst in English but still rules the company and makes the company into profit.
The gimmicks of the Management Consultancy companies and none clarification in the Organizational Development techniques are the real reasons for create a situation of \"Most Intelligent people but Less Speaking or Writing Skills are in the Streets of Job seekers\"

12: Very well written and comments are also
valuable. Around 85% resume get dumped after
the first look. So resume should be created
that it should leave a positive impression on
interviewer. There should be a sync with the
requirement of the jon and the experience of
the candidate. Only then it would make think
interviewer to pass the resume to the next
level.

Yes?

16: Well, dumping the resume is a natural thing
by the employers after the first scrutiny.
The blunders mentioned here are really
blunders, but otherwise there are many many
more mistakes in the resume, which can be
found easily. The causes can be hastiness,
insufficient knowledge, no reviews etc. One
should get the resumes reviewed by experts or
experienced industry professionals, before
putting them across and then blaming
somebody.

market also in good boom ..
I have seen a resume prepared by a Job site, which still have many errors and font mismatch and so many spelling mistakes. Then how can we believe these resume reviewers also. Whom you believe?
After paying 1000 Rs for a Resume maker, what you can tell to them once they tell that their service is over.

I can locate at least ten mistakes. I've
gotten CV's not only with simple typos and
grammatical errors, but what about the
outright lies? The people who simply cut
& paste other people's information off
the internet? Some people are so lazy, they
don't even bother to pull the other person's
name/companies out of the cut & pasted
content! OMG.
If you intend to send that CV to an MNC, you'd better write in English, not Hinglish.
TMI - Too much information. As a hiring manager, I don't care if you like to write poetry, enjoy long walks on the beach, are O+ blood type, or hope one day to have two daughters. I want to know you can do the job, not be social.
And, for the love of god, if you write a cover letter or email, don't use SMS text! Professionals expect professional writing in ALL contact. ALL. Email counts.

I stopped at five, but could certainly go on. Your CV may be "shortlisted", but if an American at an MNC is reading it, it won't stay there for long. Especially when competition is high, taking even more care, being just that more diligent, could be all that makes the difference between the shortlist and the dustbin.

I work for US Staffing, many H1’s don’t know how to write there resume nor how to explain there job responsibilities. I don’t know how come a person needs a job in US without communication skills or atleast he cannot explain about his project. Why the hell he need to travel thousands of KM from India to other countries just to do there MS. If they are capable of doing it in US why can’t they do it from India?
Present situation many of OPT’s (MS Pass out) and H1s were struggling like a hell for the job they keep on blame the companies and Hiring Managers. But no one review there skills and see where they stand.
Please remember: Recruiters or Hiring Managers were not heartless creatures. Recruiters, all the day they keep on talking to the candidates and helping them to prepare for an interview. Hiring Managers, after having a long terrific pressurized when they see a simple mistakes like this every human being gets pissed off. If you are not the one then please consult a doctor and take a proper medication. If the selected person doesn’t do well, I know the back to back pressure from the managers what the interview panel will have. Please don’t call English as bloody or dam, its playing a major role and creating a massive manpower need for our country in giving a bread and butter.
I don’t want to spoil the chain out here, if anyone needs more clarification can send me an email Chevendra@in.com
