KOLKATA: There is good news for IT students here as software companies are again looking to hire. After months of a job meltdown, firms like IBM, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are set to embark on a recruitment drive for their units in Kolkata. New IT-enabled services (ITES) companies opening shop are also taking in people. In the jobs roster, IBM has the most to offer with an almost 250 percent jump planned in its staff strength. The company now has about 800 people working at its software package competency centre here. "We are planning to recruit a good number of people soon to keep up with our growth requirements," said an IBM official. The company is also looking to expand its establishment here with news offices. Although the official wasn't willing to put a figure on the manpower requirement, industry sources said a 250 percent increase over IBM's present strength here was being planned in the next 18 months. CTS might also hire about 200 people. Several new business process outsourcing (BPO) units coming up in the city are also in the hiring mode. Miami-based Epixtar Corp. will set up its 1,000-seat call centre by yearend. Another Miami-based captive BPO, databazaar.com owned by non-resident Indian Oney Seal, is also looking to expand. The turn in the tide for Kolkata-based IT units has been caused by an estimated 35 percent growth in the first quarter of this fiscal. The city's 94 IT units have logged export earnings of $41.6 million during this period compared to $30.6 million in the same period last financial year.
