Bharti Airtel's subscriber base far ahead of BSNL
Bangalore: Bharti Airtel is far ahead of state owned BSNL in terms of its total subscriber base. Bharti added, 2.82 million mobile users in June, taking its subscriber base to 102.4 million, as per the data of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). In comparison, BSNL saw only a slight increase in its monthly addition, getting 0.8 million (eight lakh) new users in June. The data also revealed that India's total mobile subscribers based on GSM technology rose to 315.78 million with the addition of 8.89 million users in June. Bharti retained the top spot and became the first operator to cross the 100 million subscriber base mark. The telecom operator is in talks with South Africa's MTN over a deal that could lead to a full merger, thus creating the third largest wireless group in the world with more than 200 million subscribers and combined revenue of $20 billion. Other operators saw a lesser addition. For instance MTNL which operates only in Delhi and Mumbai added about 36,953 new users in June, lower than 38,036 additions in May. Vodafone Essar saw a dip in June user addition to 2.37 million from 2.54 million in May and only Idea Cellular saw an increase from 1.3 million in May to 1.61 million in June.
