NEW YORK : BearingPoint said on Wednesday it has opened a software development centre in India that will grow to as many as 3,000 employees, joining its technology services peers to take advantage of India 's modestly-paid engineers. The Mclean , Virginia-based company said its Chennai development centre is already fully operational and is targetted to grow to 2,000 employees over the next two years. BearingPoint said it could add another 1,000 people in India if demand is strong enough. US technology services companies are aggressively adding staff in India as Western companies move back-office work offshore to save costs. With Indian-based vendors competing vigorously for those deals, pricing has suffered, pressing US services firms to respond more quickly. BearingPoint said its India centre will handle software development, integration and maintenance. The move follows BearingPoint's April opening of a software development centre in Shanghai . The company, which had 15,300 employees as of June 30, recently slashed about 275 jobs, mostly in Europe .
