Bangalore tops in supercomputers' list
Bangalore: The supercomputer list by Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) unit at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) reveals that Bangalore has four of India's top 11 supercomputers, most in any city, and the third fastest in the country. The list of super computers in India will be released around April-end-May, reported The Times of India. Top Supercomputers-India, IISc's project is an effort to list the most powerful supercomputers in India and is complementary to 'Top 500' project that lists the top 500 supercomputers in the world. The list shows Bangalore, with four super computers, is ahead of Pune with three such computers, and Chennai and Delhi which have two each. The list also shows that Bangalore has the third fastest supercomputer in the country. The fastest and second fastest are from Pune. IISc's IBM blue gene supercomputer is number three, while the HP supercomputer at Computational Research Laboratory (CRL), Pune, is number one and the Param supercomputer at C-DAC Pune, number two. In Bangalore itself, IISc's IBM blue gene is the fastest supercomputer, followed by a HP Proliant at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, an SGI Altix at the CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation and Sun Microsystem's SunFire at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. SERC scientists say that Top Supercomputers-India can help Indian installation sites or institutions compare their supercomputing capabilities with their counterparts in India. "The project is meant to create and promote healthy competition among the supercomputing initiatives in India and can substantially lead to significant supercomputing advancement in the country," they say.
