Bangalore to see 225 percent rise in hotel rooms

Bangalore: Bangalore the silicon valley of India is now booming in hospitality industry too. The city tops among 21 major Asia-Pacific cities where the demand for hotel rooms far outstrips the supply. The City is projected to see a 225 percent increase in the number of rooms available in 2008, while the increase was estimated to be 44 percent in Delhi and 30 percent in Mumbai, says an international industry study. The study conducted by the American Express 2008 Asia Pacific Corporate Hotel Rate Projections and Market Forecast, released on Monday, said the occupancy rates in Bangalore were stable at 70 percent. "Despite poor city infrastructure, the supply will increase." The survey says Bangalore had 2,624 hotel rooms in 2006 but it would increase by 5900 in 2008. It said Delhi with 7,781 hotel rooms, will have 3422 more rooms by 2008, while Mumbai will add 2,400 rooms to its existing 7,940. In Delhi, the occupancy was high and stable, averaging at 80 percent and there was significant new construction activity on to reduce undersupply and access has been improved by low-cost carrier networks.
