Bangalore techies settle for low-paying jobs
Sunday, 26 July 2009, 19:14 Hrs
Bangalore: Till a few months ago, IT professional T.V. George was earning
70,000 per month, plus perks. But after losing his high-paying job, and being unemployed for three months, George, 31, has started giving tuitions in mathematics and physics to aspiring engineering students in his neighbourhood.
"Now, I am earning
15,000 per month. It's been hard. I got married only a few months before losing my job. So, when I lost my job, I was in a difficult position. Thankfully, I had some savings. With the savings, I am paying my rent and for a few other necessities," George, who was employed with a top U.S. IT company, told IANS.

"After losing my job, I tried my best to get a new job. But I remained unlucky. So to help run my home, I decided to give coaching classes to aspiring engineering students."
George is not alone. Recession has hit the IT sector in Bangalore, with scores of techies losing their jobs. Some have been forced to take up low-paying jobs as they wait to bounce back when the recession ends.
Dipankar Dutta, 27, working with an Indian IT company as software engineer, lost his job almost eight months ago.
Today he has a job, but as a content writer in a tech firm.
"Thankfully, writing has been my forte. So, I landed this job of a content writer. Otherwise I would have been in a soup. Since I cannot afford to stay in Bangalore without a job, I compromised and settled for the new job with a much lower pay package," said Dutta.
Scores of IT and ITES professionals in Bangalore have lost their jobs in recent times, an effect of the global economic meltdown. But there is no precise count of the numbers.
According to the latest employment and business outlook report by Bangalore-based staffing firm Teamlease, at 23 percent the attrition rate in this city is higher than in any other city in India.
The report was based on interviews with HR heads, CEOs and senior executives of 495 companies in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune.
"The city accounted for the highest attrition rate. IT accounts for over 80 percent of the city's total labour pool. The attrition rate was 23 percent in the last quarter, against the previous quarter's 16 percent. Much of the attrition could be involuntary attrition (or layoffs)," Teamlease General Manager Surabhi Mathur-Gandhi said.
India's Silicon Valley has seen thousands of people getting pink slips in recent months. And many more are under the threat of losing their jobs.
"It's painful to lose your job, in today's expensive world. Those who have lost their jobs are desperate now, thus they are settling for low paying jobs," Karthik Shekhar, General Secretary of UNITES-Professionals, an unrecognised union of IT/Call Centre/BPO employees, told IANS.
"Every day we meet young men and women who have lost their IT jobs recently. All they want is a job. But getting a job in the IT sector is very difficult. So, they have no option but to settle for jobs outside their fields and that too with low paying packages," Shekhar added.
"It's encouraging that today's youths are ready to move ahead in their lives. Instead of waiting for the economy to revive, IT professionals have started exploring other fields and this is a positive sign," said B.N. Gangadhar, professor of psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans), Bangalore.
Mohammed Khan, a trained software engineer, told IANS: "Initially it was difficult, but I am happy with my choice. After losing my job with an IT firm, now I am working as a sales executive. I am hoping the economy will recover soon and all the techies who have lost their jobs will get new jobs in their field."

1: Dear all,
Take this situation as blessing in disguise.. I hope majority would agree with me that even at high paying jobs.. most are not satisfied and happy.. deep inside they need change but don\'t have courage to leave the high paying jobs and continue to work.. albeit with the kind of pressure we work there is seldom time to think what we really need to be happy..
I strongly believe.. this is the time to reorient our goals towards what makes us happy rather than earning more and more.. think of adequate.. and rediscover who we really are as an individual and what matters most..
All the best to all of you

7: But isn't it that the main reason a IT guy is
paid so much is that he may be fired any
time? Its ridiculous that you IT guys want a
high paying job at the same time you should
never be fired. Funny guys!
You guys raised the cost of living in Bangalore so high. Now you suffer! Next time when you use your wallet, use your brain too, so that both you and the country is safe!

is a reason to get fired". I am sure you
belong to a kind of degree that never fetch
you handsome income. Lets understand that

9: Good solution. But it is not the permanent
one. For past 8 months the market lions are
saying the same story, "Within 2 months the
crisis will be rectified.". But still the
same.
One more new talk is there in the market side, (i.e.) in this nov and dec again one market fall will be there. They assume that the credit card problem in US will hit the globe again.

10: I honestly believe that more than todays
professionals it is mainly incompetency at
the management level that has caused this.
They dont know whom to hire and whom to fire.
They dont know whom to pay what. No Planning,
no foresight, no Vision, no Mentoring. HR is
even worse these days...recruiting techhies
even without having any knowledge about what
a good techie is. Asking developers syntax
rather than looking for aptitude, experience
and potential....how dumb is that in todays
google world.
Since the top management has been so weak, the effect will definitely cascade down the line.
It has forced ppl to strive and breathe as if they've been drowning....and u bet it's caused by our so called leaders at colleges, at companies, and at Govt.
BTW nightlife and spendthrifters dont just come from I.T. It's part of today's anti social culture not specific to I.T professionals.... just coz I.T professionals are suffering today, you can't just blame them and get away with it, there are many more who are responsible and to a greater extent. Companies hire and pay based on demand..That's the bottom line..they may hire fools and pay diamonds if the need be and not pay a penny to a genius if there's no need....I thought this is where planning and vision came but..but..but

12: these 'IT guys' are like mushrooms and sell
themselves when the 'bazaar' is 'garam' or
hot. They make 'seasonal' money and get into
the industry half baked. Mostly found in
Bangalore(where whole of young India beelines
as the IT companies there act as avataars or
saviours)these 'guy's or 'gaals' talk
technology with sorry state of knowledge in
engineering or basic education from private
colleges. The colleges and banks lending out
personal loans mint money as these new breed
of pranks sqeeze money out of their poor old
parents often threatening them of leaving
them alone if they don't give in.A guy not
even remotely worthy of becoming an engineer
passes out overnight and jostles into the IT
mainstream even by depositing considerable
amount of caution money with the employer
firm.There are numerous examples like
this.Such is the fad.PLEASE India.Please
alert these poor guys that there are many
better ways to earn money outside IT.It has
given rise to a neo-cultural fraternity which
are late night party animals,
spendthrifts,pranks, mostly liers and
insincere. They have only mastered one thing:
how to twig CV,have unlimited girlfriends
& boyfreinds and the art of switching
jobs to repay their loans for car and housing
loans. This recession will teach these people
hard reality.

20:Itz true that the jobs in IT sector had
really changed the entire outlook of the
youth of our nation(some remote villages and
rural areas which form a major portion of our
country exempted). IT did change the spending
habits and it did helped a lot of other
industries flourish by cashing in on the new
spending habit of the youth. I remember
reading somewhere that more than 60% of the
Indians are below 35 years of age and
everything started concentrating on cashing
in on the youth...Local brands to
international brands. Without the boom
supported by IT sector, many other sectors
would not have seen such a tremendous growth
in the past. For example: Real Estate,
Automobile, Retail, Aviation(they not doing
well is their problem), Luxury
products,...This fact should not be
forgotten.
I don't work for an IT company, nor any direct beneficiary sector, but I still manage to get what my schoolmates who are working with IT companies are getting and chance to travel around the world. If you take a closer look at the balance sheets of these IT companies, you can see that the net income has reduced compared to previous quarter, but have an increase in the profit. Does that ring a bell? They want to maintain their image as a growing organization in terms of profit to maintain their shareholders and stakeholders - They are answerable to them as well. They do this by downsizing the workforce or lesser salary which was eating into their profit. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of some of the employees who really put in their everything in for the company. I feel sorry for those guys.
Having said this, IT sector had made life difficult for others from Non IT sector to survive with their not so booming salaries in the recent times. Affordability became a big issue for the commoner. If all non IT sector people were running their business and benefiting out of the IT boom which happened earlier, it would have been right to say that you are also benefited. But remember, there are many others who are not so. The hyped lifestyle of IT sector had forced many within the sector to be at par with their colleagues and spend their savings. I have been reading from many newspapers and magazines about young girls who have to sacrifice their values to afford such spending power.
India is much better off compared to many other countries around the world. Lets face it as challenge our nation is undergoing and lets use our talent to contribute in its recovery irrespective of the past. Lets be more cautious with our lifestyles and let us avoid things what resulted in the present situation. I wish all those who had lost their jobs a fast recovery from the current situation and may be this is a chance to discover the hidden entrepreneur in you. Jai Hind.

Sadly, what we call an "IT Professional" is
some breed of (redundant) middle management.
If you're one of these, expect to get fired.

Let the normal man with low income also live on this earth. With SW, even the minimum requirement of a shelter also became non afordable to these common 98 % of Indian population. The SW will come back, only to essentil field with simple applications.

Writing good code does not guarantee your job. Company like Wipro, Infosys, and TCS ….etc are loosing their clients or getting less business from clients. If there is no business then for whom you will write good/bad code? I think you are superstar and genius who may be fired and can write a good code for future upcoming clients. I know one person in US who worked 20 years for Keane and now he has been laid off. For the last 9 months is out of job. He always talked good things about Keane but after 20 years he got nonsense return and reward from Keane.

32: Hi,
If you are looking out for job change, please read this
carefully.
I have more than 7 years experience in IT and was working
for a CMM Level 5 Indian MNC in Bangalore .
During 2008 Sept-Oct, I was thinking of a job change and I
got a call from TCS (Tata onsultancy Service Bangalore).
I cleared all rounds of the interview and TCS sent me the
offer letter in Nov 2008.
As everyone does and since it was recession time, I had
repeated discussions with the TCS HR person and he specifically advised me to resign from the current job ASAP and give him a tentative joining date. I gave my joining date as 2nd week of Jan 2009.
Then I gave my resignation in my company. I cleared my
background verification and medical for TCS during this time. I came out of job during last week of Dec 2008.
During my exit process, my manager told me in case if
I rethink to join back, give him a call in a week or so..
I humbly rejected it because I had committed to join TCS.
From here the story begins. After coming out of the job, I
contacted TCS HR and told him I would join on the 1st week of Jan itself.
He told all the new joinings would happen only by the 3rd
week of Jan. I did not find anything wrong.
I waited till the third week of Jan and met the TCS HR at
his office. But then, he had a whole new story.
Because of the recession, it seemed he needed special
approval for induction and asked me to wait for max 2 more weeks to get the approval for induction.
I found something wrong but he promised to honour the
offer.
Anyway I contacted my old company. But by that time they had stopped lateral hiring.
Now, it has been almost 6 months. And I am yet to get any
word from TCS.
In the mean time, I have came to know that a lot of people
have had this same experience from TCS.
All of us are experienced.
Many are married and living with their family.
All of us were pretty safe in our jobs. We now face an uncertain future because of a fake offer.
Imagine the pain that comes to a happy, secure family when
the earning member suddenly loses the job.
We resigned from our jobs- and some of us even relocated
just by trusting the brand name of TCS.
So, next time when you get an offer letter from TCS,
please think twice or atleast keep one more offer as a backup before you resign from your current job or EXPERIENCE THE UNCERTAINTY.
This mail is just to open eyes who is looking for a change in this "Recession".

37: To My All Friends(IT/NonIT),
Please spend your time to read the below article that I want to share each one of you after reading all your comments as
Overcoming Recession the Bhagwad Geeta Way
Although the trough is part of market’s sinusoidal behaviour, It is still important for businesses and individuals alike to tide over this wave with self-respect to spare. Amidst this turmoil, where else to look for inspiration than our own Bhagwad Geeta. Indeed All one needs to do is just scratch the surface of this reservoir of wisdom to unearth one beautiful pearl after another. So here is the list of Seven Habits of the Toughest People who outlast the tough times. This doctrine will stand everyone in good stead not only during the current times but indeed for all times to come:-
1. Yuktahar Viharasya Yukta Cheshtasya Karmasu…..
(Exercise Moderation):
Take the middle path rather than any extreme. Reuse before recycling. Spread your eggs in various baskets. Spend wisely. Monitor expenses. Differentiate wants from needs.
Revise targets, Reset expectations, Revisit the plans, Refine goals. Make your time count, Make your resource count, Make your money count, Manage waste.
Be disciplined in your approach and processes you follow.
2. Swadharme Nidhanam Shreyah Paradharmo Bhayavahah……
(Focus on your core competency):
Use the available resources to introspect, re-invent yourself and focus on your core competencies. Identify your Swa-Dharma which is nothing but servicing those market needs that you are best at fulfilling. Recession or No-recession, the world has to go on. Figure out where your piece in the jig-saw puzzle and play in the space where you will continue to be useful.
3. Na Hi Dnyanen Sadrisham Pavitram Iha Vidyate……..
(Multi-skill/Up-skill):
If you have time to spare because production is down, Use it to build your production capacity. In other words, re-charge, overhaul, upgrade, build additional features in your production engine/service delivery model that will enable you to give your customers more for less – not in current times but even when markets hot up later. Create that balance between your Production and Production Capacity as enumerated by Stephen Covey, Remember, Knowledge is Power
4. Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam……..
(Inculcate Quality as the Way of Life)
Follow Karma Yoga – Do the Right thing in the Right place at Right Time.
Let Quality be hallmark of all your products, processes and services. Today times may be recessionary, but when did customers ever not want value for their money? When was the expectation faster, cheaper, better not there? Quality of products, processes and services will ensure faster time to market, right product in the market and reduced cycle time – first time, every time. After all, what you are selling to customers are experiences that enrich their lives. So let Quality be the Culture.
5. Karmanyev Aadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachan…….
(Control the Controlables)
Control how you spend, control what you do, respond to the situation – not react.
Belives in the natural laws of Karma, of Action, and Reaction. If you do the Right thing, the result will have to be Right – in whatever shape or form it may occur. So take it one day at a time, One transaction at a time, One act at a time, One thought at a time and just keep your focus on responding appropriately. In cricket, the bowler has to keep pitching the ball in the right spot all the time. If he does that, it is just a matter of time before the conditions induce the batsman in losing his wicket!
6. Udharet Atman Atmanam Natmanam Avasadayet……..
(Be the Change You Want See)
You are the master of your own destiny - market conditions notwithstanding! Create positive spirals. Make one good thing dovetail into the other. Start with positive resolutions, manage your time, mange your resources, manage your stakeholders, manage your emotions, manage your expectations, manage your professional and personal life. As Sir Winston Churchill kept telling the beleaguered Britain during the Second World War –
Never, Never, Never, Never Give Up.
Also above all love yourself first so that you can able to love others, Eat well, Drink well. Sleep tight like a baby. Exercise. Meditate. Love your near and dear ones. Love your work not your company. No matter what anyone says, Life is good, world is not a bad place at all and what’s more , you can make it a little better by what you do.
7. Sukha Dukkhe Same Krutva Labhalabhau Jayajayau……..
(Don’t Worry, Be Happy)
Let go. Take the pressure off. Unload the baggage. Travel Light. Get Out of that Rat Race. Don’t worry about the results, about targets someone else set for you - or you set for yourself because of someone else’s pressure. If you are doing your best, then results will follow and water will find it’s level over a period of time. Answers cannot be consistently wrong if the method is consistently right. Beyond that , learn to accept things as they are. Life as it is. No matter how bad your situation, you can lose your sanity and make it worse.
Not Last But Least, We all know too well that tough times don’t last but tough people do. You too can.
Thanku so much for spending your valuable time...

41: I have a job with a reputed IT firm which
made record profits in billions last year,
but it chose to use the excuse of recession
to squeeze every employee at the lower level
and I am still working with almost the same
package that was offered to me 3 years ago in
campus. While the company grows Quarter to
Quarter every year, it is unwilling to share
the profits among its low level employees who
slog their asses off to bring the profits.
This is not a case of an underperforming
employee or anything, even the top rated
employees have got meagre salary improvements
over the last 2 years.
And to top that we see our managers go in business class to Client site and return without doing any sort of work. The cost of their business class ticket is equivalent to our annual pay. How pathetic when they even remove all sorts of small perks which we low level employees used to have in the name of recession. But they refuse to let go off their business class tickets and force us to work in shifts without even a single penny as allowance.
If the company was deep in trouble due to recession every employee could understand this, but when we see company making all the profits in the world and we end up gettin nothing it is truly disgusting.

44: The recession tide or recession hype has hit
us lately but the fact is that organisations
across the world are making a lot of
money/profits. In the shadow of the economic
recession, top bosses are cooling their
heels. Why the hit is on middle and lower
level management? Did the bosses gave their
ferraris/bmws/business class
flights/sumptuous lunches in the five star
hotels? No, even the meetings for cutting
down the annual budget for hospital

45: Did someone also look at a survey of how the
IT folks who saved their jobs, react to their
not so fortunate counterparts?
While some did take lower salaries, there are others who took over their boss'position, did everything possible to get their counterparts laidoff or retrenched.
In a Chicago based company in Mumbai, with offices in Gurgaon, Noida and Chennai, one female IT employee even went beyond usual psychophancy to save her job and get more than close with the new leadership team.
The movie "Outsourced" is a great depiction of this reality.

46: We all know that there is recession. In India
it has come late. But you do not have to be a
part of it. Rather than being morose just
move on. Hone your skills. I had a friend who
worked for IBM some decades ago. When IBM was
asked to move out of India his friends and
colleagues took whatever they got, inside and
outside india. This guy hung on to thin air
for want of a good offer. Result he was
unsettled and had kids to support.Ultimately,
he joined a very low end company and was
stuck. Please ,Don't let this happen to you
. These are mental blocks.

47: The need of the time is, to be multi skilled.
One can not say that only IT guys are
suffering, the wave is affecting all the
sectors only the intensity can be different
& this is higher in case of IT sector. So
anyone can be target, so to be multi skilled
is the best policy.

49: One very simple question - Did a Civil
Engineer standing in the heat on the
construction site, or a metallurgical
engineer, standing near the furnace had less
brain or labored less during his PET and then
during the graduation compared to any other
guy who studied the same or other branch, but
got a job in an IT company?
The obvious answer is "No"
But then it was IT companies who paid their employees a fortune and gained that money by charging 10 to 50 folds of the actual work involved in software development from their clients.
Naturally, the long lasting effect was to come. The clients lost all there money, recession came in
Now, no clients are not willing to pay a single penny more then what it is ought to be
Companies are seeing there reserves shrinking, hence either getting rid of employees or reducing their salaries.
These employees have actually no right to cry now. They have lifted that money and spent in pubs, which they did not deserve
Its just that, they are now getting the right salaries, at par with their other discipline counter parts, and they must learn to live in it

you are absolutely correct. The Information Technology personals spend their salary on expensive cloths, luxury living hoods, dining in 5* hotels with girl friend ect. They had paid heavy bills on food and drink. Now they are suffering just because of this. If they had been ever control their life style this situation could have been avoided. Many of such IT personals are still captured in EMI prison. They have a tendency to purchase all luxury items on EMI, hence their almost 70% (and sometimes more than this) exhausted to pay EMI every start of a months. They have no any saving/contingency/emergency fund. They enjoy only fun, fun and fun always. So, this is finally the consequence of their fun.

55:In simple terms, this is a typical low
aspiring middle class mentality. The same
mindset that got the leftists and communist
thwart the development process of the
country.
Not just high salaries, IT folks did see some obscene pampering. But why then miss out on the FMCG and Consulting folks?
Its an irony, that while a large segment of the Indian population contributed to huge FDIs into the country, gave a PQLI for their nonIT counterparts that the latter could barely imagine, when it comes to taking a negative dig at a downturn, some NonIT folks bare no bones in expressing their jealousy!

carrying oneself as a third world down

without any contribution to the country?
There are several so called techies who for this one mentality lets my country down terribly in front of foreigners. By living cheap and projecting us as a country of cheap labor.
At least there are few amongst the IT fraternity who showed the world that we Indians have come far away from being branded as cheap, poor, povertysticken natives!

71: yes,its a agreed statements about
recession, but just ask your self one question
does only IT sector will help in fullfilling
your dreams. There are many sectors which are
lacking in effecient people grab those
industries.I personally feel in IT sectors
only you see the money apart from money you
lose many valueable happyness in your life.

72: I think teaching profession is much better
profession than IT jobs. For my daughter,
contacted minimum 15 to 20 maths teacher
(home tution). Every one ask for minimum
Rs.300/- per hr and takes 1.1/2 hr. Each
teacher is holding 5 - 10 students earn
minimum Rs.30 - 45,000 pm.

80: Are these IT-techies who have lost the job
dare to go to software-product-development
sector or manufacturing companies (with IT
outlets) after normal conditions are back? ?
? I bet, they will always go for service IT
companies for handsome pay, average work (as
compared to product development) and more
"onsite-seeing" business.

81: Well Loosing a job is really sad but i think
this is also an opportunity for those who
have been laid off. If they feel they have
skills they should try their skills and
experience in getting some freelance
project(there are plenty of sites offering
work). It pays working for yourself much more
than you are working for a company. You will
be your own boss this way. Internet is a BIG
market place and just give it a try. I myself
has never worked for any company but has
always been working freelance way. I feel If
you have skills then at least in the
IT(programming/designing) field you will get
the work, need is to go after it.

fellows who are jobless not to get
disheartned and explore freelance
opportunities This is also the best time to
utilise your experience and be enterprising
as per market needs
Its not very difficult to earn the same amount as what you were getting in a job and survive
Remember each moment being spent by you for your own enterprise is an investment and returns are assured if your soul is into it

86: It's all bullshit by these IT firms. You go
through ET report and see the latest Quarter
Results. Everyone is making high return and
profit. How come IT companies are heading for
Overseas M&A, if they are not getting
sharp profit. It's only that they want to
exploit the skilled workforce at peanut's
cost and they want to continue the mood of
recession artificially, getting all profit
from govt. and employees at much lower cost.
They are no different from middle centuries
concept of MAHAJAN.
Although I'm not from IT field and I'm employed, but I can feel the pain of those who are laid-off.

87:I agree with you Rananjay Anand to some
extend. Itz true that the jobs in IT sector
had really changed the entire outlook of the
youth of our nation(some remote villages and
rural areas which form a major portion of our
country exempted).
Jai Hind.

planning to settle down by getting married
things become very difficult. Trust yourself

100: Do you guys have any idea what really caused
the recession?Apart for the whole story about
how the american sub prime mortage market
fell? The global monetary system is such that
if someone gains something somewhere in the
the world another has to loose else where. The
actually value remains near to constant its
just the numbers are high and thats what we
call inflation. And due to this simple idea is
why the rich gets richer cause they have the
resource to suck the money out of the
rest.Instead of fighting amoung ourselves the
people who are actually sufferig we should
take it to the ones who are responsible
for.Why wait for this one to settle down
cause after another 10-20 years another one
will come. Its the whole system that needs to
be cleansed.
