Bangalore software firm opens subsidiary in Dubai

Bangalore: The city-based IT solutions firm Sonata Software has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary at Dubai Internet City in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as its regional hub for expanding its presence in the Middle East and Africa, the company said Wednesday.

"Operating from the Dubai Internet City free zone, we will provide value-based IT solutions and strengthen our presence in the region by targetting market segments such as travel, tourism, hospitality and construction industry," Sonata managing director B. Ramaswamy said in a statement here.

Ranked among the top 20 Indian software and service exporters last fiscal, the $400-million Sonata's services range from IT consulting, product engineering services, application development, application management, managed testing, business intelligence, infrastructure management and packaged applications to travel solutions.

Headed by general manager Mahesh Shastry, Sonata Software FZ-LLC subsidiary will have a dedicated team with domain expertise to leverage its knowledge of the market from the Dubai Internet City, considered the region's ICT (information and communication technologies) cluster.

"Customers in the Gulf region will benefit from our alliances with global technology majors and our track record of offering services to multinationals worldwide. With our core competence and service back-up, the subsidiary will provide innovative solutions to our customers in the Middle East and Africa," Ramaswamy noted.

According to Dubai Internet City executive director Malek Al Malek, as the ICT cluster in the Gulf region, it has attracted some of the global tech firms in the IT industry over the last eight-nine years.

"Our industry can leverage on Sonata's ability to provide cutting-edge solutions and strengthen our knowledge-based economy in the UAE region," Malek said.

The Dubai Internet City hosts most of the Fortune 500 firms and about 1,200 specialised industry leaders from diverse segments of the ICT sector. As one of the largest ICT clusters in the world, it caters to the region's increasing focus on creating knowledge-based economies.

In 2008, 140 new companies joined the DIC cluster.
