BT shifts 4000 jobs from Indians to Britishers

Thursday, 16 July 2009, 19:55 Hrs
London: British Telecom will bring back at least 4,000 call-centre jobs from India to Britain as it prepares to close about half its customer service operation in the subcontinent, a newspaper reported Thursday.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston disclosed the move in response to a question by a shareholder at its annual general meeting in London Wednesday, The Times reported.
BT shifts 4000 jobs from Indians to Britishers

The paper said the eventual number of customer service positions that will be repatriated is likely to be closer to 4,000, representing half the group's 5,500 call-centre staff in India.

However, BT, which has 11,000 customer service staff in Britain, clarified its move has nothing to do with the quality of service in India.

"This is not about customer service, as the service in our operations around the globe is of very similar standards. It is about the effective deployment of our resources.

"We have opportunities to bring some activities, carried out by our partners, back from outside the UK to permanent BT employees in the U.K. who are skilled to do this work," a spokesman told The Times.

BT's action follows similar moves by businesses Powergen, Abbey and Orange.

The paper said one shareholder criticised Livingston's 686,000 pound bonus and a 1.6 million pound termination payment made last year to Francois Barrault, the head of BT's troubled IT unit.

8: Most comments are not mature and expressed views are without considering the overall effects of recession on economy & are very specific about a sector. The IT industry was strongly opposing politicians (Policy Makers) and governments to regulate the industry when the industry was booming, though this industry was extremely pampered by all governments of world.

When it’s collapsed, now demanding bailout packages all over the world to the governments, Its duty of government to look after the masses & not only classes. So, US & UK governments taking action, No Indian has right to blame the foreign governments.

In India, IT industry had provided employment to less than 2% of Indians. And because of there enormous paid jobs people feel great about them and started to teach everyone on every subjects. Explore comments on any subject on SI and you will find the proof.

When we desire a market economy we must be ready for its rules.

Don’t teach to politicians, policymakers & governments, don’t panic, let government take its own action & make your mind to work without pampered & on justified salary.

11: This is not done.. We need to have stronger international trade and this move doesnt quite make sense. The Indian Govt should not take this lightly and should interfear. For all we know this could be the rise of the fall of BPO's in India.
We have a BT centre in Gurgaon.
What shocks me is that despite the stable and money making stint India has had since 91. The industry still works as a makeshift.

13: Looks more like Gordon Brown looking to get some votes in the recession-hit election. Just as measly as anything else from the Empire which has set well below the horizon. Too little , too late. Also works against the basic capitalist thesis of survival of the fittest and comparitive advantage theory, which, incidentally, are time-tested hypotheses.

At the drop of a hat, the jobs will come back. Private enterprise is all about cost and profit. Very short-sighted pandering by BT and others. True value is the foundationstone of firm capital, and firm capital, that of enterprise. You can either bask in economic growth and prosperity or go down in a vertigo of foolish expenediture and socialistic malaise. Skews the whole environment, which is why it is so tragic-comic. It will result in more time for an economic recovery. Economics has to over-ride politics and not vice versa, guys.

14: With a lot of heated and debated arguments that I read we should not resort to any kind of mudslinging among ourselves.
I think this is a stop gap arrangement on the part of BT. In terms of IT and ITES, India is a major force to recon with and can't be ignored because of its highly focused cost effective approach and giving a good value for money. This can be only interpreted as a way to appease the British government to get the best out of them in terms of tax benefit or certain other corporate gains.

15: Its a great opportunity to build a local client base.. and like most people commented: sensibe and sustainable salary structures. I do strongly feel that this is a transitionary phase which will casue some turmoil, but shuold get sorted out and re-adjusted in the long run!
Cant blame the Brits... the political parties are under HUGE pressure to show some result.. whenther they can sustain with local labour only needs to be seen (Am not too sure they can manage!)
