BHEL to set up 10 MW power plant for Indian Navy

NEW DELHI: State-owned engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged a 
610 million order for setting up a power project at a major naval base being built at Karwar in Karnataka.
The new base, named "Project Seabird", is an integrated strategic project that is being developed in phases, with the first one due to be commissioned by May 2005.
The order includes setting up a 10 MW captive power plant comprising four units of 2.5 MW each, according to a statement issued by BHEL Wednesday.
The Karwar base will become the new home of the Indian Navy's Western Fleet, its main war-fighting arm that is currently based at Mumbai.
BHEL's scope of work will include design, engineering, supply, erection and commissioning of four diesel generated power plants and electrical power supply packages, including the main distribution system.
The Bangalore-based Industrial Systems Group of BHEL will execute the contract.
While the first package is slated to go on stream 23 weeks from now, the plant and the system is expected to become fully functional within 68 weeks, the company said.
BHEL has identified diesel-generated power as yet another thrust area. It achieved a major milestone by setting up India's largest capacity diesel power station of 128 MW on turnkey basis at Kozhikode in Kerala.
