Engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has inked a deal with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to make special batteries for its satellites.

NEW DELHI: "These special batteries, which will be charged by solar panels, provide power to spacecraft systems. The technology for fabrication and testing will be provided by ISRO for which a state-of-the-art facility is being set up at our Bangalore unit," BHEL said in a statement Wednesday. BHEL achieved a major milestone with the successful deployment of its solar panels on the INSAT-3A and GSAT2 satellites recently launched by ISRO. Both satellites carried solar panels fabricated at BHEL's Electronics Systems Division at Bangalore. ISRO funded the solar panel and battery assembly facilities. BHEL makes state-of-the-art terrestrial solar photovoltaic modules at Bangalore with an installed capacity of 2 MW a year. BHEL has supplied solar modules and systems for a wide array of applications in the country. The company has also supplied large quantities of solar cells and modules to countries like Germany, Australia and Italy.
