BANGALORE: After a dismal sale of little over 2500 units, Defense Electronics major, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), is back to the basics of redesigning Simputer, a hand held simple computer, to make it cost effective. Company Chairman and Managing Director Y Gopala Rao said ''we were able to sell only a few thousand pieces last year because of better cost effective solutions in the market than Simputer.'' ''We are back to the design with the technology partner so that the product can be made cost effective'' he added. Simputer, jointly developed by Encore Computers and Indian Institute of Science scientists, took about four years to be developed and was commercially launched about two years ago as an alternative to the expensive and bulky desktop computers and was priced at 10,000 ($250) but it failed to quite live up to its expectations. To increase the sales, the developers also decided to launch a simputer that could be used as a mobile phone, but the project never really took off.
