NEW DELHI: The Ray Paul committee, appointed by the Civil Aviation ministry to recommend decongesting New Delhi and Mumbai airports has submitted its report The New Delhi and Mumbai airports are the busiest airports in India handling flights from and to various parts of the World. Besides the launch of new low cost airlines and various bilateral treaties with friendly countries has meant increase in flight numbers. Currently, flights are being held up for at least 15 minutes in air or on the tarmac. The panel has suggested shifting the IAF station in New Delhi to Hindon and freeing the space for commercial flights at Delhi. It has also recommended segregating small aircraft and chopper take offs and landing from regular flights. With a large number of parking slots in New Delhi being under-utilized, the report suggests that this area be ``surrendered'' for civilian use. One of the reasons for planes not being allowed to land is the paucity of parking bays at Indira Gandhi International Airport. At both Delhi and Mumbai, the committee has suggested simultaneous use of existing runways. However, it has suggested a safety assessment study to be conducted at the earliest in Mumbai where both runways intersect each other.
