Chennai: Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland has bagged orders worth 4.8 billion (480 crore) for 875 high-end ultra low entry (ULE) buses from Delhi Transport Corp (DTC), the company said Thursday. The Chennai-based vehicle manufacturer has also reached a 7.1-billion contract with DTC for maintaining the buses for a period of 12 years. Ashok Leyland will supply 350 air conditioned and 525 non-air conditioned buses by September this year. Besides delivering fully-built buses, the company will maintain the buses and also train key personnel like drivers and mechanics to ensure uptime, said Ashok Leyland managing director R. Seshasayee. The new ULE buses, which will have 35 seats, will be powered by a 230 horse power engine and fitted with automatic transmission, speed limiting device and multiplex wiring. The chassis and the body for the fully-built buses will be manufactured at Ashok Leyland's Alwar plant in Rajasthan.
