NEW DELHI: The personal computer (PC) shipments in Asia Pacific recorded a growth of 8.6 per cent in 2002 to 21.7 million units compared to last year, according to Gartner. However, the worldwide PC market grew only by 3 per cent in 2002 over last year. India posted a growth of 12 per cent in PC shipments. Dell registered a growth of 23 per cent in 2002 to 1.21 million shipment units from 0.99 million units in 2001. Hewlett-Packard (which includes Compaq) registered a 3 per cent growth while Samsung posted a negative growth of 0.8 per cent to 1.21 million units in 2002 from 1.22 units in 2001. According to a Gartner release, China continued to be the dominant country in the region, as it accounted for 43 per cent of all the PC shipments in Asia-Pacific. "Much of the growth in the region came from countries such as Thailand and India, which experienced increase of 40 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively," it said. More mature markets like Hong Kong and Singapore witnessed negative growth rates in 2002 because of sluggish economies and unemployment rates hampering IT spend. In India, the PC shipment grew by 12 per cent to 2.05 million units in 2002 from 1.84 million units in 2001. Mobile PC growth rate was robust at 25 per cent compared to the 6 per cent growth rate of the desk-based PC in 2002 over last year. Mobile PC captured 16 per cent market share of total PC market this year compared to 14 per cent last year. "Mobile PCs were at aggressive price points and availability of numerous model offerings made it attractive for buyers," Gartner Dataquest Computing Platforms Asia Pacific group senior analyst Lillian Tay said. A recent Gartner end-user study showed that businesses in Asia Pacific are keeping their PCs for at least four to five years. "This indicates that 2003 could clearly be the year of replacement based on large pre-Y2K installments," the release said.
