New Delhi: India can now become a 3D hub if its domestic animation industry executes all its production activities within the country itself instead of being compelled to expend its resources in the U.S, Canada, Philippines, China and Malaysia for producing advanced animated movies. This can be made true with setting up of animation parks with hi-tech studios, according to a study on "Will Indian animation industry emerge as the next knowledge destination for jobs" brought out by industry chamber, Assocham. Assocham further predicted that the recommended parks can independently generate at least two lakh employment opportunities for skilled animators in the next three years because of growing potential in the industry. A large number of trained youth ready to embark on a career in animation. Such parks will help the Indian animation industry reach a market size of over $1 billion by 2010, with a CAGR of 30 percent. In 2007, the animation industry's market size was estimated at $450 million. The study also found out that in the absence of hi-tech studios and improved technology; currently Indian animation corporate houses are outsourcing their advanced animation work to countries like U.S., France, Canada, Malaysia and China. It also pointed out that the shortage of quality institutions which can provide technical training has resulted in shortage of animators, visualizers, conceptualizers and 3D modelers. The animation industry was also found to be dominated mainly by 25-30 year olds but there is a large gap between available courses and training needs as recognized by most animation companies in the country. A shortage of skilled manpower and specialized training institutes, lack of government funding, hi-tech studios and tax incentives is said to have an impact on the industry.
