Bangalore: Taking a large bite out of Apple iPad sales, Google's Android operating system is predicted to have a market share of 15.2 percent in 2011 and is expected to grow to 28.4 percent in 2015, reveals the industry tracker IMS Research. The report notes that at least 15 different suppliers will sell Android-based tablets by 2011 including industry majors such as Cisco, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, Acer, OpenPeak and Viewsonic. The report also projects Android's share of the tablet market to steadily grow to more than 28 percent by the end of 2015. "The availability of Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet via mobile carriers such as AT&T in the U.S. will quickly boost Google Android's presence in the tablet market," said Anna Hunt, Principal Analyst at IMS Research. It is learned that Google is working on a new version of the software that will be optimized for large-screen device, although the release date is not revealed yet. The research indicates that other operating systems will begin to make an impact by next year. "RIM and HP are making a bold play by employing a proprietary OS for their upcoming tablet products," Hunt said. It is predicted that in 2011, 7.8 percent of tablets shipped will run on operating systems other than Apple OS, Android or Microsoft Windows. The IMS Research says that Android, Apple OS and Windows will dominate the tablet market in the coming year and these three operating systems together will account for 92 percent of total market share.
