Americans now want Indian cars
Washington: Every fourth new car buyer in the U.S. is now ready to buy the next vehicle from India or China, threatening to challenge the dominance of Japanese and Koreans in the American auto market, according to a new survey.

The "Opportunity for Chinese and Indian Brands in the USA" survey by AutoPacific shows that 15 percent of the new buyers would look at buying a car from China, while 11 percent would go for a car from India.

"As Hyundai and Kia have been on the American scene for decades now, it's surprising that consideration for Chinese and Indian brands would be about as strong as it is for the Korean brands," automotive research firm AutoPacific president George Peterson said.

"It appears that buyers in America are willing to give Chinese and Indian vehicles a chance right out of the box. Understanding these consumers will be critically important to the success of any newcomer," he said.

"Not only are a significant number of people willing to consider Chinese and Indian brands, this group consists of highly desirable buyers who would be coveted by any manufacturer," Peterson said.

The study shows those looking out for Chinese and Indian cars are likely to currently own Japanese and Korean brands, indicating that these brands may face a lot of competition from the new entrants, rather than domestic brands - Chrysler, Ford or GM.

More than 30,000 buyers across the U.S. were interviewed for the survey.

2: WHICH CARS INDIANS WOULD BUY

Indians are still crazy about acquring foreign-made goods let it be clothes cosmetics electronics and other luxury items. They derive a sense of satisfaction and display a sense of pride with the ownership of foreign-made products. Americans do not have this peculiar sense of EGO associated with the country of origin of a product that they buy. American market is flooded with foreign-made goods as the American buyer is paying attention to the price and the quality of the product. Japan had traditionally dominated the American market. Korea and China have successfully reduced the Japanese share of the retail market of manufactured goods. I find it extremely hard to find made in U.S.A. products other than cars with mostly foreign components. If Americans are willing to buy Indian or Chinese cars to the same extent I would like to inquire- ARE INDIANS WILLING TO TAKE PRIDE IN THE PRODUCTS THEY MANUFACTURE.

Major, it's true there are some people who take a false sense of pride in owning a foreign car, but the analogy given by you here is not entirely correct. You only say Americans are buying more and more foreign cars, same way even Indians are buying foreign cars. So it's not a big issue.Let's not relate everything to Indian pride. I don't think people who don't buy Indian cars are any less proud of India then you are. Even Maruti which we all love has a Suzuki engine, the only truly Indian car is Tata and it holds a big market share. I think if more Indian automakers emerge with good value for money Indian people will buy their products.

Major not until Indians learn how to remove boundaries between states. There is so much of regionilization in INdia that we do not even treat each other properly and this effect also persist in USA. Indians need to learn how to live united first and then standup against other countries.. We have potentials.

American safety standards are very high. Indian car companies will have be remarkably improve thier safety standards, for e.g. how many Indian made cars come with Air Bags or Anti lock brake devices, which bye the way are the basic safety standards of American Vehicles.

Yes, cars from Ford India or Tata LandRover/Jaguar will be very much solicited in the US NOT the Nano or Ambassador or Maruti or Scorpio....

8: India itself using all foreign brands like Honda, Suzuki, Hyundai, Wax wagon, Skoda, Chevrolet,…….etc. If someone talks about Indian brand then there is only 3 companies Hindustan motors, Mahindra and the other is TATA

Dont talk Americans. They even dont know what lies out of their city. I am talking about a handful and Americans may be not all. I dont surprise when they dont know any thing out of their state live apart country. They may even not know where India is, live any Indian company. I hope you know case of Sarah Palin who said she could see Russia from her neighbour. So dont talk about Americans, what they know or what they dont know. Some even consider Japanese cars as Americans until and unless they are corrected on car showrooms. This is bcos of poor goegraphy and economic knowledge amount americans. They dont know whats happening of economy on global stage. They wont know this until they will see any Indian or chinese car on road Or listen about it from any friend. Same like they didnt know that clothes or a glass they bought were from China till they saw the label made in china.

Nobody knows where the product is from until it has a TAG on it of which company and where it is made from. I dont know if u have an ability to say where the product is from without even reading the TAG on it.

Dear Ithin for your information Jaguar/Landrower companies are ofcourse acquired by TATA but not made in India or made by Indians. The engine and design of the car has not been made by TATA.

19: I live here and I never heard any such news or any americans talking about buying Indian cars. 1 1/2 - 2 years ago, CNN was talking about Scorpio. They said that it was going to release in USA in 2008. Now we are in 2009. Kia took more than 10 years to get reasonable market in USA. We are not even near to that. Let us talk practical.

PGY,

America is too big to think like that. Most of these surveys are paid shops. They swing with money. Globalization changed america quite a bit. You will be able to see changes in big cities where people do care about controlling their cost of living opting for China and India for cars. The minute the economy is back in action, they will go for gas guzzlers and power cars.

Scorpio is India's pride by the way.

25 yrs back some one like you might have been saying there will be no taker for Indian IT software and companies but he will differ today. I know indians auto cos are not as good as japanese or koreans but TATA taking jaguar/land rover and news like this are good initial start. I also live here since 3 - 4 yrs and I have seen a change in stance for American car buyers specially may be bcos of high fuel rises that they are shifting to small car or hybrid. but every one cant buy hybrid and due to economy slowdown ppl are forced to buy small cars or economy cars. So in this scenario Chinese/Indian cos have good chances to establish themselves but with a lot of hardwork. I hope you could also differ yourself after 5- 10 yrs and believe that Indians could do it.

- distributorship to sell cars
- parts and repair access
- Quality of product
- Fit, form, and function
- visibility, credibility, and likability
- honesty and integrity - set price and no surprises

24: This is utter Bull Crap. Indian and Chinese goods are never good in comparison to the Japaneses equivalent products.

The survey said that Americans might be interested in cars from India /China ..mostly because of the price. However They never said they will buy it.

Cost and quality come together. You give peanuts and you get Monkeys.

Why Suzuki couldnt sell more Cars in India and out Tata Motors Indica if that was the reason. Even Indica was used for Taxi mostly but still business man and lot of buyers in India bought Indica other than alto or maruti. Why Suzuki couldnt stop that? No disagreement that Japanese have the technology but Indians will have quality and cost and will give good competition. When you go to a mall or online shop why would you like to buy a cheaper but sustainable product made in China (may not be good in quality as any good co) instead of costly product ? Same stands with Car but on very high level. Why would you buy a Coby DVD player instead of Sony? I know dvd player is not car but every product has some class and a class of its buyers. It will take time but you will see this Bull Crap happening some day.

All global automotive giants having their plants in India to reduce manufacturing and labor cost.. Why does mahindra wants to step in to US for manufacturing.. Also Americans always have their options for bigger cars and scorpio is just the bonnet size of GMC and ford.. As far as my knowledge only maruti, mahindra and TATA are only Indian auto manufacturers which has not much demand outside India. I live in arabia and noticed TATA has its presence in arabia but not successful. Few Indians among the expatriates opt to buy this for cheap. Toyota, Hyundai and KIA are the main competitors for any american cars globally.
