An association of U.S. business organisations in India Thursday urged the government to take steps to increase foreign investment inflows to achieve higher economic growth.

NEW DELHI: The American Chamber of Commerce in India (AMCHAM) said the Indian government's plan to achieve eight percent growth in the next two years would depend on its ability to attract large-scale foreign direct investment (FDI). "If higher growth has to be achieved, the government will have to show its commitment to overcome differences not only with opposition parties but within the ruling coalition," said an AMCHAM statement issued here. The industry lobby group said it would take a slew of measures to promote India to prospective American investors. "AMCHAM is committed to support any step that would help accelerate the growth of FDI thus supporting the growth of GDP (gross domestic product)." AMCHAM members welcomed recommendations on increasing sectoral caps, creating special economic zones, speeding up the privatisation process and an emphasis on improving the general environment of economic reforms.
