Ambuj Goyal is technologist of the year

Dr. Ambuj Goyal, who has the distinction of being the highest-ranking Indian American in IBMÂ’s 100+ history, is named siliconindiaÂ’s "Technologist of the Year 2002." The renowned Goyal, who is the GM, Solutions and Strategy, IBM Software Group, is running one of the five divisions of the $12b IBM software group. Goyal has several thousand people reporting to him worldwide and sets business strategy for the Software Group as a whole.

FREMONT: The award will be presented at a dinner banquet on November 16th. Ambuj Goyal will also deliver a keynote speech on "SellerÂ’s perspective of strategies for maximizing dollar spend value for customers," at the siliconindia annual conference on November 16, to be held at The Westin Hotel, Santa Clara. Goyal led the effort to productize IBM's DB2 Parallel Edition, the industry leading high performance commercial relational database management system, which is a growth engine for the Software Group today. Prior to this, Goyal was a Vice-President at IBM Research with 1500 IBM researchers reporting to him worldwide, located in 8 different Research labs. He set IBM's long-term research direction in computer sciences and ensured that the best emerging technologies were incorporated into services offerings and software products by IBM's various Divisions. Goyal was the force behind IBM's mind share experiments like DeepBlue (the chess computer). Goyal was instrumental in the creation of the IBM India Research Laboratory. Goyal received his B. Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1978, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1982, both in Electrical Engineering. He joined IBM Research in 1982 as a Research Staff Member and has been with IBM ever since. The two previous recipients of the siliconindia technologist of the year awards were Kumar Malavalli, CTO, Brocade Communications (2001) and Pradeep Sindhu, CTO, Juniper Networks (2000).
