Alternative power generation plant developed

Kochi: A unique power generation plant, with which one can enjoy free electricity after an initial investment of 
15,000, is soon to be commercialized.
Developed by Dehradun-based Gas Tech Electronics, the plant can be set up in any household, the company claims.
This innovation is the brainchild of A.D. Karve of the Pune-based Appropriate Rural Technology Institute, said Ashish Shah, chief of Alfa Eco Systems, the sister concern of Gas Tech Electronics.
According to Shah, the plant requires just a second hand generator, two plastic water tanks and a little bit of plumbing - all of which would cost 15,000.
The raw material for generating power comprises five kg of waste food materials rich in starch, some methanogenic bacteria (available in 500 gm of cow dung paste) and around 15 litres of water.
"These should be put into the tank and the first round of electricity is generated through the second hand generator within 20 days. It could be used for eight hours and can run a water pump, a geyser, five tube lights and two fans," Shah, who was here as part of the fifth India International Boat Show (IIBS), told IANS.
Added Shah: "After that, waste and water should be added every day and one can get uninterrupted electricity free of cost forever," said Shah.
"Our trial runs have all been successful and this would be available in the markets soon," said Shah, who won the innovative technology award for Gas Tech's LPG kit for fishing boats at the IIBS that concluded Sunday here.
This innovation, when commercialized, could find buyers in the hilly districts of Kannur, Idukki and Wayanad where power is still scarce.
The plant might also gain popularity in the state due to the easy availability of tapioca - a food item high in starch content.
